A hand-out for an Australian magpie

We’ve returned home now from our latest house-sit. They left us clear instructions which we appreciated but they didn’t mention that three or four magpies would turn up each morning at the kitchen door. I know both the UK and USA have their own versions of magpies but they are not the same as ours. We didn’t have much to offer them but we had some leftover sausage from dinner the previous evening. This one was happy to take it from my fingers which enabled Vince to take a photo of him (and me). The spots on the verandah is where the frost on the roof has melted and dripped through the nail holes onto the floor. My mother would feed quite a few magpies and had an occasional one as a pet.

I guess our early explorers just named the birds after the nearest they could find from their home country.

@RebeccasFarm I've never seen one like that either or maybe any magpie.

This magpie wasn't afraid of you.Our magpies (as same as the ones in the link below) look very different from yours.
Appearance & Identification Magpies are immediately recognisable as corvids. However, their long tails and pied plumage make them far more striking than any crow. What do Magpies look like? Magpies are dove-sized birds. They are essentially black and white

These are what we saw in England. I was amazed to read in the link that they are also found through Asia. I guess our early settlers saw black and white birds and named them after what they were used to. Thanks for the link.

@JudyEv You are welcome ! Here we see much of another sort of bird that looks like the magpie called oriental magpie robin.

@changjiangzhibin89 The oriental magpie robin looks very cute too and quite similar to our willy wagtail in shape. The photo is from Wikimedia Commons and taken by Duncan McCaskill.

It isn't that often that they'll feed from your hand if they don't know you.

@TheHorse Yes but only by about 2 hours drive. It's also more inland whereas we're a little bit closer to the coast. They would make a little bit of difference too.

Ours are different, they look pretty, but they are also pests. I had glass pebbles to decorate an area. They have moved most of them around.

@JudyEv Oh for some frost! Magpies sit in our trees waiting for me to feed my bluetit. They get so excited when I put stuff in the bin even though they can’t get at it.

@JudyEv Yes ours are just plain black and white - all very binary! Yours seem to have a bit of interesting speckling on their backs.

@xFiacre The colouring varies a bit depending on the age. And the more black on the beak, the younger they are - or maybe it's the other way round.

They are so smart. Many years ago, I lived in CA and we had a friend that had a magpie. It was free, not caged, but made it's home near and pecked on the window every morning. He would put a saucer of fruits and cereals out and the bird was so happy "talking" away while he ate. My friend would go out and get his fishing things together and one time, had opened his nightcrawler container and that magpie dive bombed him. He dropped it and the bird had a feast.

@JudyEv What do maypies eat? I have never seen one and what was it like as a pet for her? The magpie that you are feeding looks very comfortable with you feeding him or her.
