A hand-out for an Australian magpie

We’ve returned home now from our latest house-sit. They left us clear instructions which we appreciated but they didn’t mention that three or four magpies would turn up each morning at the kitchen door. I know both the UK and USA have their own versions of magpies but they are not the same as ours.
We didn’t have much to offer them but we had some leftover sausage from dinner the previous evening. This one was happy to take it from my fingers which enabled Vince to take a photo of him (and me). The spots on the verandah is where the frost on the roof has melted and dripped through the nail holes onto the floor.
My mother would feed quite a few magpies and had an occasional one as a pet.

@RebeccasFarm I've never seen one like that either or maybe any magpie.

It's a good photo. Magpies are smart birdies.

@JudyEv Yes, that's true. Corvids are everywhere.

This magpie wasn't afraid of you.Our magpies (as same as the ones in the link below) look very different from yours.
Appearance & Identification Magpies are immediately recognisable as corvids. However, their long tails and pied plumage make them far more striking than any crow. What do Magpies look like? Magpies are dove-sized birds. They are essentially black and white

@changjiangzhibin89 The oriental magpie robin looks very cute too and quite similar to our willy wagtail in shape. The photo is from Wikimedia Commons and taken by Duncan McCaskill.

Your magpies are pretty too but quite different to ours in colouring.

They are so smart. Many years ago, I lived in CA and we had a friend that had a magpie. It was free, not caged, but made it's home near and pecked on the window every morning. He would put a saucer of fruits and cereals out and the bird was so happy "talking" away while he ate. My friend would go out and get his fishing things together and one time, had opened his nightcrawler container and that magpie dive bombed him. He dropped it and the bird had a feast.

I love the glimpse of the lush looking plants as well. So fun, I imagine, to hand feed the birds.

There was a lot of garden and pot plants. I'm glad we weren't there over summer.

The owners must have been feeding them and that explains why this magpie let you feed it
