Q of the Day- What's Your Favorite Drink to Enjoy During a Heat Wave?

With the arrival of July 4th weekend many look forward to watching the fireworks celebrations. Well, after that one there will be another type of FIREWORKS to observe and this one will last through the rest of July and August. And it won't be the enjoyable kind! No, it will be what is commonly called the 3 H's, HAZY, HOT AND HUMID. ICK!
***So, what kind of drink do you refresh yourself with when the summer weather becomes unbearable? I enjoy a nice glass of lemonade. Club soda is another favorite of mine. Refreshing, cold and tasty, just the beverage to cool off on a sweltering humid day.
Of course, taking the alternative view there are certain beverages we should avoid? What drinks would you stay away from and why? Here are a couple I found to get you thinking.
1. ALCOHOL
-Boy I sure enjoy a bottle of beer which for me goes down so smooth on a hot humid day. Or how about a glass of wine, a pina colada, or another favorite mixed drink instead.
Why is it that something which tastes so good can be so bad for you...
***The explanation is simple. These types of liquids drain our body of water due to making us pee more when drinking them. They always say to hydrate in the heat, and beer or other alcohols do the opposite, making us prone to heat illness or worse.
How does drinking alcohol on a hot day effect you? Makes me tired and sluggish later on.
2. COFFEE AND TEA
-My mom loved her coffee so much she solved the problem by putting some ice in hers and presto... Iced Coffee. A cooling off refreshing beverage or was it. Not so fast!
***The caffeine in coffee causes an increase in urine production making you pee more because it acts like a diuretic. Which leads to a dehydrated body. Yep, I can definitely attest to coffee causing me to urinate more!
Have you tried and enjoyed "ice coffee or tea?"
Ok, time for your feedback. Now, let's not "bottle up" your thoughts on this 2-part question. What's your favorite beverage to drink during those dog days of summer? And can you add another bad drink to avoid and put on my list?

@dgobucks226 — here’s something interesting, which may or may not be true (who can believe what they read): Gatorade tastes different when you’re hot after a workout than it does when you’re sitting, cool and comfy in the recliner in the living room.

@dgobucks226 Gatorade contains high levels of sugar and food dyes, not something I will ever drink.

I agree with you on that. I like the idea of adding a slice of lime or lemon to it for some flavor. My choice is usually lemon when I drink it.
Did you know: Gatorade is actually a good sport drink because it contains electrolytes, useful in replacing the salt and minerals we lose when sweating.
But I cannot stand the taste!

Bad bad bad drink is soda, they're loaded with chemicals that aren't good for anyone to begin with and most likely aren't that good for hot summer days ..... I didn't know that dehydration would be a big problem in humid areas.
I drink 2 cups of coffee in the morning and then it's water or milk and I do 'eat' a lot of watery soups. I know, coffee ain't ideal especially in dry hot areas like mine but still, I want my coffee .... hmmm, almost said MTV

I'm lucky, I don't have a sweet tooth instead I like nachos or salty treats but I rarely eat them. I also eat mostly organic foods and fruit is limited to things like blue berries and pineapple .... the latter may not be as healthy as I'd like but it's tasty.
I never could stand the taste of gatorade either so I simply make lemonade with no sugar of any kind added.
Also, in summer I like salty soup but I use sea salt and never too salty because I spend the really hot parts of the day indoors with the cooler on.

@rebelann Good deal Soup is definitely a comfort food for me. Just not very often in summer.

You nailed it with soda. SODA- this one packs a dual whammy caffeine and sugar leading to dehydration. In addition, sugar causes the cells in the body to transfer more water and increase urination.
We need to replenish the water and salt in our bodies lost through sweating.

Ha, ha... At one point I did want my coffee and MTV too!

Some good choices. Sweetened juice can make you urinate more causing you to lose fluids. So easy on that one.
Here is another addition of one to avoid:

Nowadays water but there used to be a drink that I loved a lot back when my aunty was alive she used to take me to Pizza hut. There was a drink called KiwiLemonade. It was so refreshing. I would always order that to drink while my Aunty and cousins would always order a coke.

Lemonade with very little sugar. Sugary beverages don't quench thirst. They dehydrate.

You are exactly right. And sugar causes the cells in the body to transfer more water and increase urination.

You can't beat water for staying hydrated and safe from heat illness. I still have my morning coffee too, but when it's a scorcher, I'm sweating as I drink it.

@dgobucks226 I know, I can drink coffee and need water to quench my thirst. Kind of weird but I love my water. I gave up soda many years ago. We do not need all of hat sugar. Enjoy your weekend.

During this heat, I crave milk tea which is my favorite nowadays. I would only have to take it seldom because of my blood sugar. I drink lots of water after.

An interesting choice for a hot day.
Here is another addition:
Although popular with some people, ENERGY DRINKS- have caffeine in them that is the culprit. These also might contain even more caffeine than coffee or soda. This will cause your body to dehydrate.

For me it's an ice cold water. Unhealthy ones, iced tea and Mountain Dew.

@dgobucks226 Yep, I know mountain dew contains more caffeine than coffee. That's why I rarely drink it. And when I do, it's on those days that I want to stay awake at night.

Yes, the best alternative to stay safe. We lose a lot of water on those hot, humid days and water is a great way to replenish what we lose from sweating.
Mountain Dew was a favorite of mine as a kid. Little did I know the sugar in it caused me to want to drink more of it.

Water or iced tea. And I have plenty of decaf tea to keep my happy!
It seems to me that milk wouldn't be good on a hot day because it tends to be "heavy" on the stomach. Well, at least on mine.

@dgobucks226 — I’ll take the old favorite Gatorade over an “energy drink.”

I would agree with you on the milk. I don't think dairy would sit well. Yes, I only make decaf iced tea too.
Another bad one to avoid:
ENERGY DRINKS- the caffeine in them that is the culprit. These also might contain even more caffeine than coffee or soda.
Although I've seen people buy them at the convenience stores during hot summer days.
