A horse rug good enough to eat

I’ve borrowed a photo from a friend’s FB page to show one of the latest fashions in horse-rugs. There is a very wide range of horse rugs. You can get lightweight summer rugs which are more about keeping flies from annoying thin-skinned horses than providing warmth. Winter rugs come in various weights with linings designed to provide a lot of warmth or just a little. Some are quilted and many are waterproof. Most now have tail flaps which hang over the horse’s rump. Neck rugs come in the same wide range so that sometimes it’s hard to tell what colour a horse is as so much of it is covered up.

Ah, even horses can be in fashion (oh but they are so beautiful as they are, but I guess they can get cold too). I like this fancy carrot one !

Once, rugs only came in white but now they are all colours of the rainbow. There are even lycra type ones but they don't seem to be too popular now. I've no idea how they got the horses into these.

That’s such a great idea! Flies can be so bad for animals skin.

One of my ponies had a reaction to mosquito bites and would break out in sores. I had to keep him rugged right through summer.

That is so kool. My friend has a pitbull and a mixed dalmation, I'll bet those two would love to have a rug all their own.

Most of the dogs at the rides have rugs too. The three dogs we house-sat all had rugs at night. Individual rugs as well as loose rugs to snuggle in.

It's a huge market. I must take a few photos of horses in their rugs. I don't have any of my own - photos that is.

Such a fine horse looks adorable in that, even though I know it is for practical reasons.

Most of the riders will spend money on their horses before spending it on themselves.

@JudyEv - I wonder if horses see colours, I have to search.

@LadyDuck I think they do but I'll await your findings. I know one woman used to say that her horse didn't like blue jumps and would always baulk at them.

I don't really think the horses recognise carrots in that format! Which is probably a good thing.

The rugs come in all colours and combinations of colours nowadays. I must take more photos of them. I usually wait till the rugs are removed before I take photos.

I think it would be quite a warm one. Towards the back, you can see the edge of another white one underneath. Some of the horses have had their coats clipped so on cold days they might need more than one rug.

@Beestring It's not a lining. I can see how you might think that but it's a separate rug.

Even though it is not red, it makes me think of Little Red Riding Hood. I bet this horse is proud of the rug it is wearing. This one looks pretty comfortable, but the lycra ones do not at all.
