Getting back into crochet

Doll Set

I’ve just downloaded a crochet pattern for a child’s Christmas beanie. It looks a bit like a Christmas tree and has beads attached. Someone put a photo up and now all the ladies in our lifestyle village are oohing and aahing and wanting them for their grandchildren. As I like crocheting and don’t have enough to do at the moment, I offered to make some. The pattern was on Etsy and it was easy enough to buy and download but honestly, some of these people must think the general public are stupid. The blurb was saying to hurry and make your purchase as there was only about 20 patterns left. How can a site ‘run out’ of patterns? Am I missing something? The photo is of some tiny garments I made once for a baby doll. I’ve put it up before but newer members may not have seen it.

That's so neat, I really wish that I was into doing something like that.

I have taken up watercolour painting, again. I was pretty useless in younger days and haven't gotten any better. Still it does keep me quiet for ages!

Good for you. I'm hopeless at anything arty but my Mum could draw well. They are having a Paint Mingle and Sip in the clubroom on Friday but it's oil-painting I think. Do you paint anything in particular?

@Ronrybs There are a couple here who have written about how they going about painting with watercolours and it sounds very complicated - putting on washes first and all sorts of carry-on. Of course, the results are worth all the effort.

@JudyEv I am following an online course, so at the moment it is learning technique. Who knew water could be so complicated!

The above ones look quite well made. Such hobbies can take some skill but can be very satisfying to create.

I'm looking forward to doing one and putting a photo of it here. I don't think I should use their photo. I have downloaded the pattern and hopefully I can get the yarn tomorrow. And thanks for the kind words.

Not really but for starters, you're all fingers and thumbs trying to hold the wool and needle. Like everything, it's just a knack.

No, you're not missing a thing, it seems so many internet retailers use the ole 'hurry before they're all gone' spiel to get more buyers.

Even the fancy patterns are really just a combination of the basic stitches. I like it because it grows more quickly than knitting.

I understand physical stores saying they've got a limited number of something left but an online store isn't the same. They can't "run out" of anything. Whoever posted that is a bit on the mental side, in my opinion.

I'm always very careful working with white wool as it's easy for it to get a bit stained/dirty/whatever.

Crocheting with such fine cotton is a bit fiddly but not hard otherwise. Actually I had the doll and made the pattern up as I went along so that it would be a good fit. I had to remember to have the neck opening big enough to get the dress over the doll's head. There are tiny buttons at the neck.
