Weird Weddings

I think I was thirteen when I attended probably the weirdest wedding I have ever been to, between a teacher in my school (she taught me in 3rd and 4th grade) and the man who ran the school cafeteria. They also went to our church, and she was in charge of the kids in the puppet ministry. Some of you are probably like, whaaat? So, you know how someone always gets up and sings at the wedding? From the baptistry, appeared two hands with puppets attached, singing to each other (my sister was one of the puppets). That probably was the weirdest wedding I have ever attended. What was the weirdest or most unusual wedding you ever attended?

The weirdest wedding that I ever attended was one of my cousins and her hubby. Nicky married a guy she met on a Caribbean cruise named Ron, he was from Boston. Ron worshiped Harley Davidson motorcycles, and he rode one, as did Nicky. The entire wedding party left the church on Harleys and Nicky rode in a sidecar on Ron's bike. All of the guys in the wedding party had the Harley Davidson logo on their tuxedo cumberbunds. My uncle, the father of the bride, was dying with brain cancer at the time, he rode in a limo with my Aunt. Their wedding was July 2nd, and the theme was Christmas in July, and part way through the reception we all had to go outside and watch the fireworks that they had set off for the guests and them. It was weird.

Sounds like loads of fun! I'm not a Harley fan (they're so loud), but I could enjoy all of that. Are they still together?

@AmbiePam It made a sad impression on many of us as we knew that our Uncle was suffering so. It was difficult for him to last during the reception, they did take him home for a sleep for a period of time. He didn't need to be outside being eaten by mosquitoes to see fireworks.

I went to the wedding of my former next door neighbor as well as my older sister many years ago. Normal weddings with the exception of the priest who married my older sister who looked like the actor Marlon Brando.

That's funny. The man who officiated at our granddaughter's wedding looked like Elon Musk, only cuter. He was wealthy, but not like Elon.

No offbeat weddings but I once went to a Jewish one where they stomped the glass

@AmbiePam Yup. My best friend's first wedding. I just refused to go to any others. (My two weddings were before a judge, not in a church with lots of people.)

@ambiepam Weird? I conducted a weird wedding - just him, her and their 3 year old along with 2 witnesses. I started and the 3 year old said “I need a wee wee mummy” so the bride hitched up her flouncy big frock and took the daughter out without so much an excuse me. The groom then followed and I was left with 2 witnesses who then went out for a smoke and there I stood with my words all ready and me all dressed up looking ridiculous at the front of the church with no-one to marry. Eventually they all resumed their positions and I carried on.

@1creekgirl I felt so stupid standing there on my own. I was invited to the reception after a wedding I officiated at once and between courses EVERYBODY got up and went out for a smoke leaving me sitting there alone and feeling very silly.

Maybe my marriage to Bob. We used the church parlor. I decorated with potted plants. The children's choir sang. I have not been to too many really weird weddings. My son played the wedding march on his trumpet.

None that I can remember. Mostly weddings I attended were Latvian weddings in the states when I lived in NYC and they were usually very big and lavish affairs.

I've been to more than 30 weddings, but I don't think any of them were all that weird, although some were more memorable than others. One was in a castle, one was in a cave, some were in church. One I went to in America was a big affair with about a dozen bridesmaids and at the conclusion of the ceremony everyone applauded - this is probably normal but for us in the UK it's a very strange thing to do at the conclusion of what is supposed to be a solemn legal undertaking! One we went to in Greece was photographed all the way through by a very intrusive photographer who was shoving his camera in the faces of the couple all the way through the religious part of the ritual (Greek Orthodox) while the congregation kept walking in and out all the time - again this is probably normal for Greece but we found it very odd!

Yeah, the applauding happens a lot at American weddings. It’s all serious, then everyone starts clapping. I can understand why that would be jarring. The wedding in Greece would have thrown me for a loop.

@AmbiePam When photos of Meghan and Harry's wedding were shown in the US it was claimed all the family looked glum and therefore they must have disapproved of the marriage. No they just weren't laughing and applauding gleefully, they were looking suitably serious as appropriate for a solemn and life-changing ceremony.

I’ve been to a lot of weddings. One was when the groom had a child and she was included in the wedding vows. The bride promised to love and protect the child as if she was her own. I thought that was neat.

I think that is unique! It can be weird, but it is something that no many people would have! I haven't been to many weddings, none of the ones I have been to have been weird, just stressful since I had to help decorate and such haha

Someone suggested we send it to America’s Funniest Home Videos. Honestly, if their “love” story had ended better we’d probably all remember it as charming. Because back then, it was sweet and quirky. Weird too, but still charming.

That sounds like an interesting wedding. I have never been to a weird wedding because the weddings I have been to seem very much the same, just ordinary weddings. Although saying that, some of the guests at some of them could have been described as `Weird' , me included probably.

That's funny to think about. The only kind of odd thing about a wedding I attended was for one of my cousins. She and her groom had one of their friends sing a song during the ceremony and seriously the guy sang completely flat. He couldn't sing, but I don't think he even realized how bad he was. My Dad and husband could not contain themselves. They stood behind a wall and laughed. Years later, my cousin mentioned it. She realized how he couldn't sing but she and her groom couldn't say no to the friend because he was so looking forward to being able to share something in their wedding.

I went to a wedding like that too, where the groom's sister was singing. She was honestly pretty bad. Of course we all had to pretend to enjoy it.

None that I remember. I have been to so many but nothing seemed weird there. But the recent few ones were too extravagant and I found that more of a show off than a wedding.
