Debate: "Where to store the ketchup?"

Before the end of June this year, the concern brought people into a debate about where to put the ketchup in the fridge or cupboard. That makes citizens on social media separated by their opinions. To stop the issue, Kraft Heinz tweeted: "FYI: Ketchup. goes. in. the. fridge." Along this course, a survey was conducted. The result is remarkable, agreeing to Heinz for about 63%. What do you think about the ketchup controversy? Do you believe ketchup belongs in the refrigerator or the cupboard?

Ketchup is one of those funny foods. It's shelf-stable until it's opened and then needs to be stored in the fridge. It's a processed food but the high acidity makes it stable until opened.

The principle speaks itself with the shelf-stable once being opened should be in the fridge.

Until it's sealed in the cupboard, once it's opened in the refrigerator.

@LadyDuck Indeed, it is logically right.

You are right. Some people claimed that it is fine to put in the cupboard if not opened.

@Shavkat In the grocery stores is not in the cold section, so it's perfectly fine to keep it in the cupboard before you open it.

I have always kept it in the fridge, along with mustard and mayonnaise.

In the countryside, ketchup must be kept in the fridge once being opened and it is also the same thing with the mayonnaise.

In general, I just keep the ketchup on the table and it is fine. Probably it is no need to keep it inside the refrigerator?

I think it is fine if it is not opened. I hope it will not be spoiled during the summer season. I am saying it because it is too hot in Guangdong province.

It is also the same thing here. Since we are living in a cool weather mountain, there is no need to put it in the fridge.

We also let the ketchup stay at room temperature.

I know a few people who store it out or in a cupboard. But I always keep my ketchup in the refrigerator.

My parents taught us to put the ketchup in the fridge if being opened.

Never got conscious about it until I read it. I never bothered if it was kept in fridge or on the table. But I noticed that my wife keeps it in the fridge.

@Shavkat Well maybe in your case it may be an exception because you are in a cooler place then the rest of us.

I think it is a normal process that we can do when having a bottle of ketchup at home.

Indeed. It is also the same thing I groceries. It is okay that unopened ketchups do not need to put in the fridge.

In the fridge only because ketchup is better cold than room temp. Still, I don't think it would spoil if left on the table compared to other processed foods. How about you? Where do you keep your ketchup?

Since I am living in a city with a cool weather all year round, it is fine to just be on the table if being used.

@Shavkat I agree. During the rainy season, like now, and during the colder months (Dec to Feb), I don't worry about leaving even food on the kitchen table because I know it won't spoil immediately.

Unopened bottles of ketchup are stored in our pantry. Once it's opened, then it goes in the fridge with other condiments.

We also practiced this. Once the seal was broken, it needs to be stored in the fridge.

At home, we just let it stay on the table. The room temperature will sustain the right texture of it.
