What do you do when you have a power failur and the lights go out? No electricity. How do you survive assuming it has been out for a while? I'm looking for some unique but true facts here please?

At my office, I have 1 KVA generating set runs by diesel. If power goes, we have to put the change over switch on. At home, I have a 7-hour backup UPS for computer and a single light. Another inverter for 2 rooms which has 3 hours standby powersupply. Normally, the powersupply companies inform well in advance the cut off of powersupply if it is more than 30 minutes to 8 hours. Uusually it is during day time.

I will have to check out the inverters. Are they expensive? Where could I get more information on them? Thanks

Buy an inverter that can run the lights and other gadgets of your choice and get it connected to the main power line with the help of an electrician. As the power goes off thr inverter activates and you remain in the light.

I will have to check into that. We have kept saying we would be a generator but never do then we think about it again when the lights are off again. Do you know how those work? Thanks for the response.

Flashlights work well, also candles for lighting. If you have a grill that runs by propane, you can pretty much do your cooking outside going back to the "old fashioned" way of cooking with a pan.

great advice that is what I like to here from a discussion. Do you suggest cooking over an open fire or grill? Have you tried one of those new flashlights that you shake to recharge the battery and its a lifetime battery?

Two years ago, our city was in the middle of an ice storm. All power was out, some for 5-7 days. During the 36 hours we were without power, we used kerosene heaters for heat, candles for light, and ate a lot of canned goods. My grandfather, at age 70, was being cared for by my parents. My father took his gasoline generator and connected it to the house power. They were able to run the house with the generator for about 1 hour per gallon of gas.

I have thought about the generator but how did he get gas for it if the city had no power? Thanks for the response. Hope it doesn't happen again.

well I know my mom is a candle freak so we have tons of candles so we just all get in a room, light some candles and bust out a board game. I have to admit some of the best times have been spent with my family with no power just having some good old fashioned fun! The power needs to go out every now and then to remind us why we have familys.

We have supplies for camping so we always dig them out when the electric is out here. We have the food thing under control now if we can only find a way to stay warm we will be okay. Thanks for the response.

Emergency light - This emergency light is what I use in case of a power outage so that I can see my way around the house.
I use a flashlight to get around the house if I need to get something. This emergency lighting is very helpful and very bright. Me and my neighbors will usually go outside and talk to each other. The longest that we have gone without power was about an hour and a half. Plus I am still able to use my computer during a power outage with the battery backup that I use.

I remember when we had a flood once and all the lights in the city were out. Good thing is it was around 10 PM, so it was almost bed time and it didn't matter. But, the electricity didn't come back on until the next day around noon. I remember taking a cold shower, we had to throw some of the food away from the fridge and it wasn't that bad.
