Do You Like Prunes?

Prunes are dried plums; but not all species of plums can be dried. Prunes provide 57% of the Daily Value of Vitamin K and provide a laxative effect when 3.5 ounces or more are consumed each day. Prunes are used in preparing sweet and savory dishes.
Prunes are very sweet; and I eat them every day. I don't, however, care much for prune juice. It has a heavy consistency that I don't like. I remember my mother making prune whip. It was a heavenly concoction of whipped egg whites, prunes and a custard sauce. So good. I made a pork roast once that had sweet potatoes, dried apricots and prunes. That was very good also.
Do you like prunes? Do you use them in cooking?

@JudyEv Years ago my then boyfriend's parents were staying near us in their caravan. We invited them for dinner and as dessert, made a prune fool. Next day his dad accused us of giving it to them as some sort of practical joke, knowing they would have to get up in the night. Honestly we just made it because we thought it was really nice!

I don't like prunes and I don't cook with them. I love plums though! We used to have plum trees in our yard when I was growing up in Louisiana and I loved pulling green plums to eat with salt!
I just scored a 4# bag of plums last week at local grocery store for $1. When they clear out a produce item, they fill a big bag and price them for $1 a bag. Love those deals. I got a bag of naval oranges that day also for $1.00!

I do like prunes and prune juice but haven't had any lately, I got mad at Walmart but they are the best for me with prices but they have upped their delivery fee from $7 to $9

Walmart's prices aren't what they used to be. We buy a lot of Great Value and Equate products. Have a wonderful day.

@LindaOHio ........I had come across a Hershey's recipe booklet when searching for a recipe to use in my HomeEc class in high school and found a brownie recipe that called for prunes. I tried it and they were delicious.

I absolutely love them! Luckily I don't find they have a laxative effect because I could very easily eat an entire 500 g bag (just over 2 pounds) by myself!
They used to be sort of s*iggered about, because if you were seen buying prune juice you must be constipated right? Luckily nowadays dried fruit is considered much more acceptable to enjoy just as a snack. (*=n)

@LindaOHio I know, but over the last few decades they have become more mainstream. I remember when I was at school, a 'health food' shop opened in our local town and my friend and I would go there after school (we had about half an hour between school ending and the bus home, just enough time to walk to town and visit a shop or two). We used to argue over whether prunes or dried apricots were better. At that time I was an advocate for dried apricots, but nowadays I prefer prunes!

I love to eat prunes in a salad. It's shredded beets, parsley, sea salt, beets, and mayo. When my mom makes stuffed cabbage she puts prunes in the pot she cooks them in. They are really good and add flavor to the liquid.

@LindaOHio Usually she makes stuffed cabbage in a pot. She adds water to the pot and adds prunes and shredded carrots and shredded cabbage and other things. Last time she did it in the oven I think but you'd still have liquid in whatever you cook it in.

Hmmmm. I've never heard of prunes in the stuffed cabbage liquid. Wait a minute, she cooks them in liquid and not in the oven? That's different.

I like them. I eat them but not consistently. I have had them and dried apricots stuffed into a pork roast with rice. I have noticed the last few years we do not get the Prune Plums in the store like we did when my family was young. They were smaller and dark blue and egg shaped. They are the variety most often used to make prunes.

I like Prunes. They are a good source of fiber and aids regular bowel movement but I don't get to eat them often. I don't use it for cooking, I just eat it as it is. I sometimes would drink prune juice but I'm not a fan of it so much. I'd rather just eat the plum itself.

I don't mind prunes, but I'm more of a plum fan, especially when it comes to baking. Zwetschgenkuchen (German Plum Cake) is an absolute favorite of mine, and it brings back the sweetest memories of baking with my grandma. There's just something magical about those juicy plums in a warm, sugary embrace.
