Paying for information

United Kingdom
December 15, 2023 4:31am CST
When I need to find out something online, I Google whatever it is I need to know and I click on the links that they send me. Sometimes I am given a link to Wikipedia. I have noticed recently that Wikipedia has been trying to get donations from their users. I do not know if this is a good thing because I always thought that Wikipedia was a free online encyclopaedia. They state that they do not use ads to fund the site, but they still need to make money. Would you send them a donation? A friend of mine has an account with Bing , they get any information they need and Bing also reward their users with vouchers.

I’ve donated a few times to Wikipedia. They rely on donations to operate I believe. I’ve not paid this year and I’ve had a number of begging emails. I rarely use it now so I’m less keen to keep on donating. I don’t see them as a charity so they won’t be getting my “charity” money.

That is the trouble once you have donated to a cause like that, they get your email and then they keep wanting more. It is enough that you have donated as much as you felt was right.

Even free online sites need a little help from time to time. I usually send them a donation. On Bing, I add up points each time I use the search option and can get vouchers.

Are Bing good at sending out vouchers or do they take a long time like some other sites? I have used sites where you claim your reward and then have to wait at least 30 days for them to send it.

@celticeagle Evouchers are good if you shop online. What do you buy with yours, if you don`t mind me asking?

I do not use Wikipedia as much as normally one does. I also see a caption sometimes, where they ask for donations. I do not know how many people actually donate them but if someone who uses it regularly and donates them, it is fine. I have not donated any money to Wikipedia.

@lazydaizee Yes, if someone is using it frequently, then no harm in donating a convenient amount to the site.

@dpk262006 That is true and they would soon get their moneys worth.

I suppose it would be a good idea for somebody to donate if they used the site often. Especially if they depended on Wikipedia for information and they would be lost without it.

These donations can add up if you donate to different causes.

They have a fundraiser a couple of times a year because it's the only way they fund the site to keep it going. I've never sent them a donation.

I suppose they have to support it somehow because somebody must have to pay the website provider. These websites are not cheap , and that is a big one.

I've sent them a donation a couple of times because I use their site a lot. It costs $$ to run a website like that. Hope you have a good weekend.

@lazydaizee Every year I get an email asking for $2 or $3. They also have a request on their website once or twice a year.

@LindaOHio It is a bit of a cheek asking you to pay a certain amount. Do they share your email details with other people or other charities?

I suppose it is a personal choice if you want to send them a donation. Do they keep asking you for more money ?

Over the years I have seen their solicitations for donations. I have not, and would not donate to them.

They have a funding drive every year at this time...Wiki I mean. I think I donated to them once.

Can you donate as much or as little as you want to? Some other charities ask for a specific amount that they want each person to donate and I think it should be up to the individual how much they give.

I've donated two or three times as I use them a lot. Some won't have a bar of donating to them but I think it's okay. AND they send a thank you note which is nice.

It is nice to get a thank you note after you have made a donation.
