My first pair of Fashionable shoes.

I was a teenager during the 1970s when Platform Shoes were becoming all the rage. I wanted to start wearing more fashionable shoes , so I saved up my money that I had earned and I went out to the shoe shop.
When I got there, I found that platform shoes were really expensive to buy because they were in fashion and everybody wanted them. I saw a pair of platform sandals that were sort of like a clog with a wooden base. These shoes had been reduced in price (probably because no one else liked them ), they were my size and I had enough money for them so I brought them.
I tried to wear them home but I could barely walk on them. They must have looked very silly on me, but I thought they were great.

@lazydaizee When you're a teenager, you just want whatever is in fashion. lol I have a lot more sense now.

@JudyEv That is true about teenagers, although I often see older people wearing shoes and clothes that are not really age appropriate just because they want to follow some fashion.

I did not get on very well with pointy toed shoes because they were uncomfortable. It did not help that my big toes seem to stick up for some reason. I also have wide feet, and pointy toed shoes seemed to be designed for people with narrow feet.

I'm glad you were able to buy new shoes after saving money. That's a good memory you had.

@mildredtabitha Shoes can be expensive to buy new. It was nice of you to give your shoes to somebody else to use.

It is one of my funniest memories, when I think about myself hobbling about on those shoes.

I remember those platform shoes. Luckily, I was working in a shoe store then and got some at cost... They weren't the giant ones, but they were pretty high.

@lazydaizee Yeah, it was OK. The best thing was getting a number of shoes at cost. I had shoes from there for many years.I even had a pair of blue suede hush puppies.

Did you find it interesting working in a shoe shop? Especially when somebody like me came in and brought inappropriate shoes.

@snowy22315 Hush Puppies were all the rage at one time. They were supposed to be really comfortable to wear. I can remember having a pair of suede shoes in pink and red.

I had a pair of platforms when I worked as a cocktail waitress. By the end of the night the bones in my feet felt like they were going to come out the bottom of my feet. They hurt so bad!

I am surprised you were allowed to wear platform shoes while working as a waitress. They would not allow it these days. I used to work in a cafe, but I did not wear my platforms to work. If I did I would have been falling about all over the place and the customers would never have got any food. There would have been a lot of smashed plates and cups too.

@celticeagle The powers that be do not allow a lot of things here in the UK because of health and safety. Many companies live in fear of being sued if somebody accidently gets hurt on their premises. This is why safe shoes have to be worn by members of staff when dealing with the public.

I never indulged in platform shoes in the 70s. I wore heels to work every day of various styles. I did like the fashions of the 60s and 70s though. I think I even had a couple pairs of "hot pants" at one point. Have a good day.

@lazydaizee In the 60s I loved the Carnaby Street fashions. I loved the London look.

@LindaOHio It was a popular look in those days. Did you ever hear about a shop called ` Biba', this was well known in the 1960s and early seventies. They did bring back a more modern version of the brand a few years ago.

I remember the craze for `hot pants' these were very short shorts sometimes with a bib at the front. I had a blue pair as a child. They became popular because these shorts were more practical than mini skirts.

I used to wear normal court shoes but they started falling off my feet! So now I wear shoes with a bar across like I used to wear when I was at school to keep them on my feet!

That must have been uncomfortable to have shoes that keep falling off. I find I wear boots more than shoes now because I find them more comfortable, and warmer in the cold weather.

@lazydaizee It wasn't very pleasant no, but the shoes I wear now are good. They could do with some new insoles though!
I'm glad you find the boots more comfortable. I tried my boots on incase of bad weather and they were anything but!

@sharonelton I find ankle boots are best because they give the foot good support. I do have a pair of knee height boots but I only get them out in the really bad weather. I have fat calves so I sometimes struggle to do up the zip, but I normally manage to squeeze into them.

I still remember my platform shoes I was young, quite good looking and wore mini skirts. I clearly remember a whistle that a working man gave me when I was walking down the street. Now it would be harassement but then I just felt happy and beautiful.

@lazydaizee The new ideas about not even looking at a woman are absolutly stupid as I see them. One thing is to rape or harass a person and quite another is to tell her that she is beautiful. I can happily make a list of the movie actors I find attractive. And I also find many actresses beautiful and that does not mean that I am treating anyone as an object

I used to get whistled at and it always made me laugh, I did not find it offensive at all. I definitely did not get any whistles while I was clomping about on my platform shoes because I looked so uncomfortable in them.

@marguicha I agree, looking at somebody is not as aggressive as actually touching them when they do not want to be touched. It is easy to ignore or avoid somebody who is looking, if you do not want them to.

Ah youth - the things we did to look fashionable! In high school, pumps were all the rage. Some girls wore super high heels, but I just got maybe 1.5 - 2 inches high at the most. They looked great with my outfits, but ugh, my feet wanted to get chopped off. My toes were cramped and I had a heel blister all day, everyday.

@lazydaizee Plasters . . . is that what we call "bandaids" in the US? Oh gosh I did that too. And I'm not even sure that made the situation any better. I probably had blisters on my blisters . Yah, I hardly ever broke in new shoes either . . . I was just so excited to wear these new shoes right away. Back in the days, I did have somewhat narrow feet . . . but was told that as we get older, our feet widen - and that has happened to me. Now I have a knee problem - so crazy shoes, heels and styles are just out of the question for me.

I can remember the days of putting up with blisters on my heels and toes. I must have got through loads of packets of plasters and those things you stick on the back of the shoe to stop the heel rubbing. I also made the mistake of wearing new shoes straight away and not wearing them in properly. The style of shoes I always brought seemed to be designed for women with narrow feet, and my feet are on the wide size, so this was a problem too.

@much2say Sorry to hear you have a knee problem, can you have anything done about it?. Mine ache from time to time but it only last a short time so far. I know knees can be affected by ageing.
As for feet getting wider as we age, mine will be massive because I have always had wide feet and a high instep.

@lazydaizee I still wear heels to go out, but not as high as I did when I was younger. I wear almost flat shoes only when we go walking.

Platform shoes could be very heavy and were not very suitable for some activities. I started to wear high heels when I was a teenager, but I did not get on very well with them. My feet tend to go to one side and I would always risk twisting my ankles if the heels were too high. The bottom of the heel would always wear out faster on one side because of the way that I walked.
Nowadays I stick to ankle boots and trainers.

Maybe you are too young, they became popular in the 1970s. Platform shoes were in fashion from the early 1970s to the mid 1970s.

I've worn stiletto heels in my time but now I much prefer flats. I'm short so maybe platforms would give me a taste of being taller but I'd be scared I'd fall off them and hurt myself.

It is very easy to fall off of platform shoes. When I think about these shoes now, I think about what it is like to walk on stilts. There were a lot of young ladies with broken ankles and pulled muscles when these shoes first became popular in the 1970s.
I prefer flats these days too, or maybe something with a very small heel.
