Do you keep bananas in the fridge?

I just found out that bananas should be kept in the fridge. They become overripe so fast and I had to give up on them. I have a digestive problem and I can't eat overripe fruits. Where I live it's not very cold. There are over 25 degrees Celsius indoors and this is without a heating system. Do you keep bananas or other fruits in the fridge?

No, they are not supposed to be kept in the refrigerator. They are a tropical fruit, the cold messes with the enzymes, the skins turn black, and yes, they will change texture. Honesty, please look it up. It’s just not a good way to store bananas.

There is mixed information. I didn't know that they weren't supposed to be kept in the refrigerator.

We've never kept bananas in the fridge. We rarely have them in the house since our youngest son moved out. I don't eat them-it's a texture thing-and my wife only buys two or three at a time when she does want them.

@dya80dya Apples are okay. Grapes, sometimes.

Bananas have always been one of my favorite fruits. I have never kept them in the fridge. No need to as in my family they would get eaten too fast to worry about. But now in later years, if I buy bananas, they bring gnats (fruit flies) into the house and those are difficult to get rid of. The last time I bought bananas was for New Year's Eve maybe 3 years ago to share with my grandson as he spent the night with me. It took me over a year to finally get the final gnat out of my home. If I ever eat a banana again it will have to be outside.

This happened to me too. I had to use some traps and I could get rid of those annoying fruit flies. But it took a long time to get rid of them. Overripe bananas can bring those gnats.

@dya80dya I didn't use traps. I used Dawn dish detergent and vinegar and water. I also made soap sudsy water in the sink overnight. The suds attract and trap the gnats. In the morning there would be a large quantity of gnats in both the kitchen and bathroom sinks that got caught in the suds. But it still took over a year to get rid of the gnats that came with the bananas from one purchase. I think the gnat eggs are on the banana peel stems at purchase.

I have not tried it, but it is a good way not to overripe them.

I haven't tried it either. Some people say that they shouldn't be kept in the fridge and others say that we should. I am confused.

Sometimes l put them in the fridge in order to slow down the ripening process.

Don't they change if they are kept in the fridge for a long time? Doesn't their skin turn black?

I keep citrus fruits and grapes in the fridge. Not bananas as it's not usually that warm here and they get used up and eaten quite quickly when we have them.

I don't keep any fruits in the fridge. I have never had any problem with keeping them in fruit bowls on a table in the house. Bananas are the only thing I won't buy anymore because they have always brought the gnats into the house with them.

I keep grapes too in the fridge. My mom keeps citrus fruits in the fridge, in this way they last longer.

I never put bananas or snake fruit in the refrigerator because these are fruits that must be eaten immediately.

And do they change if you keep them in the fridge? Is their color different?

I keep fruits in the refrigerator but not bananas. I only buy the few that we eat in the next 3 to 4 days and I keep on the windowsill that is cold enough.

@dya80dya The windowsill is a lot colder than the kitchen counters, but not as cold as the refrigerator. I tried to put them in the refrigerator, they become all black in two days.

In 3 to 4 days bananas become black and I can't eat them. Keeping them on the windowsill is a good idea.

No, I do not put bananas in the fridge. When they are so ripe, I bake cupcakes or cake with them.
