More boat people arrive off West Australia's shores

In my opinion, Australia doesn’t take in enough refugees but, having said that, I’ve mentioned to a few myLotters that I’m glad we’re an island. Anyone wishing to come here has to come by air or sea and the authorities take great pains to police all avenues of arrival. At one point, we had a lot of ‘boat people’ arriving illegally along the west coast but the number is now negligible. There are also a lot of Indonesian fishing boats which operate illegally in Australian waters, and desperate would-be immigrants employ fishermen to bring them to our coasts. No-one would undertake such a journey without very good reason. Last Friday, three groups of men from Pakistan and Bangladesh were found wandering in the bush near Beagle Bay, on the Dampier Peninsula, 2,151 kilometres from Perth, 2,000 km from Darwin but only 70 km from Indonesia’s Rote Island. Beagle Bay, a former Catholic mission, has an indigenous community of less than 400 but is open to the public. The main tourist attraction is the little church, the interior of which is adorned in mother-of-pearl shell. The men were expecting to be dropped off near a city but instead found themselves on a remote beach. They were picked up by chance and could easily have perished in the harsh conditions. They have been taken to a processing facility on Nauru and most likely they will never be allowed to settle in Australia. It’s all very sad. The sunset photo is not from that area.

That IS sad. As you probably know already, America is bursting at the seams with illegal immigrants. We gets a lot of legal immigrants fair and square, who came to live here the right way. However, too many are creating an absolute crisis, and our President has let it get to an all time low point.

That why I'm glad we're surrounded by sea. At least we have some hope of stopping a lot of illegal immigration.

I know Judy, this is all very sad. We see people reaching the Italian coastline in too small boats every day. They come from Africa and they try (from Italy) to freely move through the others European states. May die in the sea when their boats sink. We should help those countries so that people do not need to go away.

Australia sometimes shows very little compassion to some of these people.

@JudyEv It is not different here in Europe. Some countries are worse than others.

It sounds like they are so desperate to stay in your country.

People don't undertake those boat trips unless they are desperate.

That photo is wondrous Judy. Australia doesn't mess around with invaders.

@JudyEv Ah well Judy, you know I do not hate any people really, but all the services are shutting down in Denver..rec centers, libraries, parks..they have no money at all with feeding these invaders..and the taxpayers are furious. In the end, here, we are all in the same boat, the destitute and the 'migrants, the same..we are all being grouped into one category if you know what I mean.. I am not a conspiracy person, but it would be hard to not see what is happening here.

They don't but sometimes the authorities don't have any compassion at all.

@RebeccasFarm I hear what you're saying and it doesn't sound harsh. I'd be saying the same if we were overrun with immigrants.

That's a pity. America is overrun with illegal immigrants. That's a pretty photo. Have a good day.

Thankfully we're not overrun and we're not letting in very many at all compared to some countries.

That's sad, I wonder where the Australian authority will take these men to eventually. That's a beautiful photo.

It's really awful. Some have stayed in Nauru for many years. Mostly I think they try to send them back to their own countries.

Your government has a lot of “first people” or indigenous peoples to care for first. Just like our government does. My opinion.

That's true but I think we'd be able to take more if the government were a bit more compassionate.

@JudyEv — “compassion” and “government” have never been comparable. Before the Great Depression the churches did all of the “relief” work in the U.S. (Personally, I think they need to get back to that instead of building churches the size of small towns [you wouldn’t believe the size of the one I passed in Memphis the other day!], but that’s me…)

@FourWalls I agree too. There is a monstrosity near my sister's place. It's beautiful really but you know what I mean. Heaven knows how many hungry people the money might have fed.

I'm sure that's true. There is a lot of famine in many countries as well as persecution, and people get really desperate. .

The 'common person' can do so little with any of this. Refugees have to be desperate to leave their homes and families but most of the time it seems they're jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

@JudyEv We could do more to help as a nation, but there is a lack of political will and it is easier to blame them

We are very choosy about how many and who we allow in. I'm not sure we're really taking our share.

@dgobucks226 There needs to be some controls but with open boundaries, entry must be hard to restrict.

@JudyEv At one time we were choosy too. Immigrants were fully vetted before being admitted. This has changed to a drastic degree under our current President and his administration.

There just has to be some kind of a better solution for immigrants, It always seems they cannot go back and they cannot go forward so where do governments expect them to go?????

It’s surprising that people from Pakistan would journey all the way to Australia instead of trying to emigrate to Europe. The refugee problem seems to be getting out of hand all over the world.

@JudyEv It’s all part of the great plan to take over the world and spread radical Islam. Lol Serious, they’re probably told all kinds of things and empty promises about a better life. Maybe they’re even telling them they are taking them to the US.

I hear you. I guess they come straight down through Asia to Indonesia. You don't know what they're told back in their own countries. They don't seem to know a lot about our country.

The refugees, if given asylum, should be loyal to the host country. Some bring in the negative traits from their countries that they are running away from. I have lived in a few countries and made every effort to become a part of society.

You are quite right. Migrants should try to assimilate into the local community but the local community should also make them welcome and try to help them.
