A gift for us

We were given this beautiful bunch of roses yesterday. There is a lovely young lady who is the grand-daughter of one of the couples in our village. She now gets called the ‘village grand-daughter’ as she is loved by everyone here. She knows a lot of the residents, gives us all hugs when she meets us and is generally just all-round delightful. She regularly visits her grandparents and attends the movies and Friday evening functions. Shortly she is going to Canada and wanted to give her grandparents a photograph of herself. So Vince took some photos of her last night and she brought us the roses. They are very lovely but I can’t get over the length of the stems on these. They must give them growth hormones or somesuch.

Those are beautiful roses, and such a lovely gesture, both on Vince's behalf as well as the granddaughter's. The roses may have been grown in special soil to produce the stems that they have-genetically boosted so to speak.

Thanks for the information. I thought there must have been some trick to it.

Hard to write a poem when the roses aren’t red, but I’ll give it a go. If the roses are yellow Then the violets aren’t blue From this silly fellow Will this poem do?

Those roses are beautiful. My neighbor has roses with a very long stem, I am going to ask if he gives them something.

It seems some are given hormones to make the stems longer.

@JudyEv I have a red rose bush that grew "spontaneously" in our garden. Those have a long stem. I have no idea how that plant could grow there. Even the gardener was surprised. I did not plant it and during the first 8 years we lived here no plants grew up there.

@LadyDuck I think it would be quite unusual for a rose bush to suddenly grow. What a lovely unexpected gift.

@JudyEv When my father bought a radiogram in 1968 it came with some 45s and 78s which included the version of Yellow Rose of Texas as crooned by Pat Boone. The huge radiogram the size of a credenza was then shipped from Malawi to Ireland (my parents were quite potty) and I’ve no idea where it is now.

@xFiacre These things were huge back then. Wouldn't our parents be flabbergasted by all the changes now? I'm that way myself at times.

Yellow is beautiful when it comes to roses. You are a keen observer They are a type of roses that normally have long stems. Grandiflora?

I'm sure you're right but I don't know. Someone said they're fed special hormones to help the growth.
