The rich exploiting the poor

Another story about man’s inhumanity to his fellow man. Several people in the UK have been jailed for exploiting people they employed. The four jailed are members of a billionaire Indian family. The workers had their passports seized, were forced to work 18 hour days and were underpaid. The workers, mostly illiterate Indian nationals, were employed at the family’s lakeside villa in Switzerland. Swiss police seized precious jewels and assets that may be used for legal fees and possible penalties. These people are billionaires, for Pete’s sake. Why could they not see fit to pay their workers at least a minimum wage? My mind is boggling.

@judyev The richer some people are the harder they seem to find it to let go of the purse strings. Here people found to mistreat animals are often forbidden to keep pets in the future - it’s a pity the same principle doesn’t apply to people who mistreat employees.

@JudyEv Poorer people seem to be more generous and give away a higher percentage of their income. It may be meagre compared to what a rich person could donate but then we remember Jesus’ comment about how a widow gave a very small amount out of her lack of wealth while the rich gave more (in an ostentatious manner, looking for praise) out of their great wealth. It was the widow who was commended.

They've got plenty of money. Why not just do the right thing?

I don’t think the UK is involved in this. All this is happening in Switzerland, where they have been sentenced, but not jailed yet. From what I have read, they are going to appeal. None of them were at the sentencing as one is poorly in Monaco, and the rest are at his bedside keeping vigil. Convenient or what? I hope we (the UK) disown them and they get to serve their sentences.

@JudyEv I’d never heard of this family until the news story. They have lots of money and obviously multiple homes. Tax dodgers and people traffickers it seems. The only association with the UK seems to be business related. I’ve read that this problem with modern day slavery is quite prevalent In Switzerland. They must have employment laws that are easily circumvented. It is a problem here too, but less so.

@Orson_Kart We have people trafficking here but on a lesser scale. I'm more and more pleased that we're more or less a big island. It's not so easy to smuggle people in and out.

I think you're right. One at least is a Swiss citizen but I thought they lived in England and had a holiday villa in Switzerland. Wherever they live, it's not a nice way to treat their hired help.

Maybe that's how they became billionaires, by doing illegal things like you described. This could just be the first time they were actually caught. Shame on them, I hope they have to pay, big time.

@JudyEv Every time I read or hear of extreme cruelty and people being so horrible, I think, well, it can't get any worse--and it does. Sad, so sad.

I have come to learn that the more money people have the more greedy they become and have no sense of doing good by anyone else but themselves,

When they have so much wealth, it surely shouldn't be necessary to be so unscrupulous.

Although not exclusive to Billionaires, it seems those with money (in some cases) choose to save a buck by taking advantage of others. Those in higher positions of wealth throughout history at one time or another taken advantage of those less fortunate.

Most of the rich are not like this, but of course, unscrupulous people exist all over the world, and come in all shapes and sizes and financial statuses. I'd prefer they use the word "criminal" than "the rich," because it paints an unfair picture of rich people that too many people like to hang on. Most rich people are very hard working, good people, making a very significant and positive impact on the world.

@JudyEv The ones who people claim are not concerned about others is made up nonsense. They create businesses which produces products and services that make our lives better and easier, which provide millions and millions of jobs, provide trillions and trillions to the tax revenues, and that allow ordinary people to share in the wealth through investing into the very companies that are created. I just think people are wrong about the rich, and I just like to correct the record. The rich are not the evil, greedy people they get portrayed as. Like I said, there are bad people everywhere. You don't have to be rich to be a bad person, and in fact, the majority of bad people AREN'T rich. I'm not scolding you, by the way. But I will defend the rich to the very end. How many union workers are exploiting the rich, you ask? Every...single...one...of...them. And you don't think the rich are being exploited by people who think they should be paid $20 an hour to flip a burger??? Come on, man. lol It cuts both ways.

It is more of a perversion of behavior to another human being. I have lived a life to give more than I take and that gives fulfillment more than any material possessions.
