Light Bulb Went Off Today

My husband has not been feeling well for a couple of days now. As you may recall, he went to the doctor last week for a check up. All was good. His bloodwork was excellent. His doctor did prescribe a diuretic (fluid pill) to ease some swelling in his ankles and also help with lowering blood pressure. He's already on 3-4 blood pressure medicines and knows not to change any of those per my husband's cardiologist. So, my husband got the fluid pills and started taking them. We soon noticed spikes in his blood sugar. We couldn't figure out what was going on. He had been doing so good with blood sugar that he didn't need his morning and sometimes night dose of insulin. He was just taking the weekly dose of another insulin that is long acting. Yesterday, my husband was dizzy and thought he had vertigo coming on again. He gets it a couple o f times a year. Then today he had a dizzy spell, blurred vision and also high blood sugar. When his vision cleared up he researched this fluid pill the doctor gave him and read about the side effects. Bingo!! Causes severe blood sugar rises, causes dizziness and can even cause kidney failure. Now why would his primary doctor prescribe this medication to a diabetic? Needless to say, he will not be going back to this doctor. Have you encountered a dumb move by your doctor? What happened? Photo Credit: Pixabay, Public Domain

That’s pathetic. The last time that happened I made an appointment so that doctor could see me face to face to explain why he prescribed something so bad for me (not as bad as your husband’s doctor). He sputtered and stammered, and couldn’t think of much to say. But I felt better confronting him about it. I only told him as I was leaving he would no longer be my doctor. I am so glad you caught on to the problem!

Doctors should be there to help people, ask questions, check their medical background and be sure they are not prescribing something that could be dangerous. I had the same problem years ago, I got a medication that caused my heart beat to go up to 140, my doctor should know that I have this heart problem.

You are 100% right! They should know. It's right there in the medical records. I'm sorry that happened to you! The medical field is not what it used to be in my opinion--at least in the terms of caring and competent doctors.

@kareng - Doctors do not take the time to read, it happens all the time that they "did not know" something that is clearly written in your medical records. I agree doctors were a lot better in the past.

You always have to advocate for yourself. Doctors are not really well trained in pharmacy. The pharmacist should have caught this. Bob is on a med that is new, that coulc protect his heart and kidneys, but it also could cause issues. I was once told by a doctor that they have to weigh the benefits, versus the risks and give it a try. I am going to talk to our primary today and see what she thinks. He has developed a UTI since starting it.

It sounds like that won't be a good medication for him if it gave him a UTI!

I'm glad you found the reason for his high blood sugar and dizziness. I wouldn't go back to that doctor either. Yes, I did. I changed my primary.

Vince should have been sent immediately to an optometrist when he lost half the vision in one eye but the doctor said it was an infection. When Vin returned to that practice and said he didn't want to see that particular doctor, the doctor had retired.

Wow! It sounds like it was a good thing that doctor retired and that may have been a way out for him after several complaints!

@JudyEv Right, that is on the young side in the 50's to retire in that profession.

@kareng We wonder that too. He didn't seem that old to us - maybe late 50s/early 60s.

This was his primary doctor and he should of known very well. Checking side effects for high risk patients should be a priority before prescribing medication!

Reading about the possible side effects of some prescription pills could scare anyone from taking them. However in most cases there isn't an option and the percentage of those who suffer the severe effects is usually low.

It basically boils down to situation like say this person has liver cancer. Doctor prescribes medicine to that individual that can cause liver cancer or acceleration of liver cancer. STUPID AND INCOMPETENT DOCTOR. You don't give a diabetes patient who is on multiple insulin shots per day something that will raise their blood sugar even more. He is lucky he didn't go into diabetic shock and end up in the hospital.
