Why do people feel the need to send hate mail?

The photo has nothing to do with the post although it is Olympic-standard show-jumping. Australia did well in the Olympics but the one event that created most controversy for our country was the break-dancing. A 36-year-old Australian university professor, Rachael Gunn, known as Raygun, scored zero points. She knew she didn’t have the ‘moves’ of the younger contestants but went for originality and creativity. I guess it was one of those performances that you either loved or hated. Be that as it may, what is sickening to me, is that she and her family have been subjected to hate mail on social media. What’s wrong with just ignoring her performance or bad-mouthing her to your friends? Why do people feel the need to send hate messages and threats? It just doesn’t make sense to me.

@judyev I suspect that there’s some kind of personal inadequacy that motivates trolls, some need to belittle others to big themselves up. Sad really.

They see everything as a zero-sum game. They think if they can diminish someone else, they somehow get increased.

@xander6464 @xFiacre @jaylar I think you're right. It's just so awful. Bad enough to attack the individual but then to start attacking her family - it's despicable.

This is so sad, I wonder why people has to be so hateful. Sometimes it's only because they are jealous.

@LadyDuck Being anonymous makes cowardly people much braver than they would otherwise be.

Yes, I think you are right. They feel important if they're picking on someone.

You are so on point. She was a delight, and she is getting a lot of support from a very popular national sports show here. They have called out her haters, and have been vocal in wishing her continued success in whatever she does. It makes no sense the dreck people sent her way. I hope she can find joy in what got her to where she is, and not let idiots get in her way.

That's so nice to hear that a sports show is supporting her. The breaking community is too. Perhaps if there is more of this support and calling haters for what they are, there might be less of hate mail.

I thought it was a bit harsh awarding her zero points. It wasn’t that bad. Certainly not as bad as our Geordie Dancer, who didn’t make the cut:

@JudyEv I don’t think they give out minus marks. Did you not watch the video? I thought it would give you a giggle.

@Orson_Kart I've watched it now. It doesn't look very polished, does it? I don't know how Raygun got selected. I can understand the 'pros' laughing at these two but at least they were willing to have a go.

Zero is pretty low, isn't it? But heavens above, I just saw it as a bit of fun really. Hardly necessary to start sending hate mail.

In RL, you could be identified...today, online, you can exercise your sense of powerless, of inferiority, by attacking another. So these nothings feel great sending a hate mail to a person they consider superior

@jaylar Yes you are very much right. Many hide behind the cloud of anonymity and do whatever pleases their crooked mindset.

I don't agree with hate mail at all, or hateful comments on social media either. To me they are just showing what kind of person they are..mean and petty.SMH.(shaking my head)

Hate messages and Threats seem to have become a trend. A trend especially on YouTube , Instagram and to a lesser extent on Facebook and Twitter. I would blame the proliferation of reels, Shorts and excessive data usage on mobiles, laptops and even TVs. Some people like us know our boundaries. Yet many, even with proclaimed high qualifications or socio-economic rankings and moral high grounds do not. I think the anonymity with sending a hate mail or even hate comments on various media helps many of the sadistic or similar tendencies to do so.

Here in America, we have made hate very profitable. DonOld Trump became President based on nothing but hate and he pocketed over a billion dollars from it. It's hard to stop something that makes so much money.

@xander6464 I completely and totally agree with you in this statement. Trump left a legacy, for sure, from his presidency. A legacy of hate and dishonor.

I too am bothered by the amount of hate I see and hear. It is as though people forget about common decency and only seek to cause hurt--I also think that people who spew hate are really hurting inside, but choose not to feel it

@JudyEv I agree--I am not excusing them or their actions.--it has just been my experience that often, these people choose not to experience their pain and so, find it easier to hurt others--it sucks

I'm sure some of the hateful people ARE hurting but it's a pity they have to take out their anger and hurt on others.

These people are so unhappy with themselves that they can't even face themselves, so they have to lash out. It's no excuse but this is their coping mechanism. I would challenge them. Ask them when was the last time they got a hug or a kiss. Ask them if anyone said anything nice to them lately. They are bullies. Most bullies have been bullied at one time and they live sad lives.

I'm sure you're right that they're unhappy and I'm sure most are bullies too. It is really awful that they can be so full of hate.

Usually from people who could do no better. So much easier to attack from the anonymity of the net, then put in any effort to do better

Yes, you're right. Being anonymous makes it easy for people to attack others. There would be a lot less of it if there were names to all the comments.

@JudyEv It is a hard one, tackling hate mail, but protecting privacy. I know I couldn't track down who sent any evil messages, it seems to required an amount of computer savvy and knowledge

Unfortunately , there are lot of people around the world who are bickering and sad about something or everything in their lives. When people like Raygun show up and becomes viral , all the frustration and bickering are showered on the all the known and unknown ones of Raygun. Bad mouthing has become a standard thing for such people and they get happiness in doing that. We are not speaking of positive criticisim, this is pure bad hate attacks. In that way, these people feel superior whereas in real lives, they are nobody. Unfortunately, the laws needs to be strengthened so that people can vent their frustration elsewhere and not on people like Raygun!

I agree with what you say. There would not be so much bad mouthing if these people weren't allowed to be anonymous. I don't suppose the situation will change any time soon.
