Do you believe in the old adage that No Good Deed Goes Unpunished? My story.

I do not believe in Murphy's Law. I believe that the best will happen, though I prepare for the worst. But I am re-evaluating my assessment of the No Good Deed Goes Unpunished Law. As you know from my previous posts, I did a lot of pro bono work for a woman from Africa (Ivory Coast, specifically) as she was starting a new preschool. She does not speak or write well in English, but I took the reins (as an idealistic American who speaks a bit of French) and wrote a bunch of promotional material material for her, as well as her Statement of Purpose, etc. At my normal consulting rate, she would have been charged $1500.00 or so. I can write pretty fast. But I decided to do that work pro bono (for free), as she was an immigrant, and was trying to get a new business started in the United States. I also did some work for her in her "classroom," working directly with the children (remember Harper?), and reporting to her about their progress, as well as my assessment of her teachers' work. I gave her an 80 per cent discount, relative to my basic consulting rate, for that work, because she was just getting started. As of this moment, she owes me $1,150 for the paid work I did for her. She has owed me this amount for about eight months. She said, "They never go after me. I no pay you." I contacted the police in her area, and filed a report, but they said there was nothing they can do, as this is a "civil" matter. A certain MyLotter warned me against doing "business" with people from that Country. But did I listen? No. This evening, after teaching at Guitar Center, I went to my liquor store, to get a small bottle of Scotch. The woman next to me had four items, and I had one, so I, being a gentleman, gestured her in front of me. Thank you, Dad. Then it happened. "I'll have one Powerball." "And four number 27s." "Oh, you're out of 27s? OK, four 28s." And on and on. After about five minutes, I realized I had made a mistake by being a "gentleman," as my father had taught me half a century ago. "...and eight number fives..." After ten minutes, I went into "prayer mode." Nothing could hurt me. I did make it home. And I am now sipping Scotch. What do you think of the adage "No good deed goes unpunished"?

Unfortunately "No good deed goes unpunished" cannot be more true. If you knew how many times we have paid for being good. I hope someone can help you with that woman from Africa.

Only animals are fair. Humans unfair.LOL I feed some stray dogs, poor cuties, they try to come home, but I cannot let them. Our building does not allow pets. If I could, I would keep all those dogs with me. LOL. I am also old, though. Cannot do bathing, exercising them, and so on. But I know at least six of them would love to be at my place. They almost walk me down to my place. I wish I could at least hug them, but stray dogs do have diseases. Love exists both ways, but valid reasons prevent me from doing anything.

I think that may be a lost cause. I guess I do hope Karma catches up with her.

I believe in the adage based on the laws when I was working for a pizza delivery company that "What goes around comes around."

@Deepizzaguy I have seen it with my own eyes a handful of times. I may be seeing it with Donald Trump. But I want to see him stay alive long enough to realize (if possible) what he has done.

I don't think that's karma getting back at you. George would have and has done the same thing for other people who only had one or two items. As for getting paid back, you should've gotten it in writing. Created a contract. I supose you could take her to small claims court, but I'm not sure if its worth it.

@TheHorse No, they don't. But, as the police said, it's a civl matter that's your only really legal option. You might be able to get her for breach of contract, but that'd be a long shot.

I actually documented every day I worked for her. I have the whole thing in writing. Small Claims has the power to render a decision. But they don't "enforce."

You mean, somebody will treat him like a kid someday and indulge him? I thought we all are already doing that...

You have a good heart and I'm sorry you were taken advantage of in both instances. I believe in the ten fold, karma or whatever others believe in (what goes around comes around.) For all the kindness, good things do and will happen. Eventually, something will happen to the lady and most likely wind up costing her 10 times what she owes you.

It makes sense that she would. If she would do this sort of thing to someone who did major pro bono work for her, she might do it to a mortgage company that has more lawyers behind it than I do.

I go by - doing a good deed is by itself the reward. But I understand how one feels when others take us for granted and we end up feeling naive. I have never demanded how much I should be paid and my employers took advantage of that and when I wanted to leave, I learned how they appreciated my work!

I believe the preschool person is knowingly a crook. The lotto lady is just oblivious. With you just having one item, if I had four, I would have had you go ahead of me. That does not even include the tickets. You are right about small claims court and the crook. I think that at some point you will say "expensive lesson learned" and quit carrying the burden of being a victim of petty crime. Your time was definitely worth the money and was probably worth much much more to the little kids you interacted with. But you will not get paid.

It can be a delicate balance. I have met more "exploiters" here in the Bay Area than in other places I've lived.

Small claims court has the power to render a decision. But not to enforce. A hardened criminal just laughs at small claims court.

Sorry to hear this .I believe you should approach a good lawyer and present your case. Perhaps there should be some loophole that we missed or never thought of and that should support your case in court. Since you have the writing and documentation , there is evidence of work done. Additional proofs such as voice mails /calls /texts should suffice .It is clear case of taken advantage of. You had a good heart to help that was exploited. Karma works in mysterious ways , however lets do things thats in our control.

Whenever I really need something or need to have things turn my way I rely on prayer and I persevere until what I want I get. No major stuff but still, I had an issue for money from a survey site. Back and forth with the company I thought OK guess I give up on the $5 and yet, I looked up and asked for divine intervention. The company relented and even though I did not get it in cash I got $5 gift card for Amazon and I need those because that is where I order my big bags of dry food for the cats, I looked up and said Thank you, Lord,

I guess I tend to let go of the little things. Like $1150.00. Eventually. But I do have a belief in justice. I would love to see this world be a safe place for good people.
