In today’s digital age, we have accounts in some online or social media platforms. As our lives connected with online and social media platforms, our memories and life events are also part of those platforms. Unfortunately, there are times, when we could lose a near and dear one/ a friend or an acquaintance. Their social media accounts could perhaps be one of the precious things that we are left with. If these platforms could implement a standard memorialization rule that will help maintaining and managing these accounts in the most respectful manner, then it could perhaps be of great benefit. Rules could have options for family member to manage the profile. It will also enhance the user trust on online platforms. It could be most compassionate thing ever, addressing the needs of the grieving ones and maintaining the dignity of those who departed. Whats your take on this - should all online /Social Media platforms have rules for memorialization of accounts belonging to demised ones?

It is a sensitive matter, for family it could be a way to remember the person but for social media sites it is and account that has no activity. Maybe just sent everything that is in the account to a family member and then close it...

It is definitely a sensitive matter. Well, guess social media sites should decide what needs to be done to legacy accounts. Thanks for sharing!

It should be the case. Plus each such site or App should clearly mention the steps. Of course, it could mean sharing the identity proof of the person who is nominated.

I feel that when someone sets up an account, as we did here, we should have the option on closure in the event of our demise. Although that would require alot of work.

Most stuff remains so long as the sites remain and no one deletes the accounts so far as I know. Perhaps the best plan is if you want something memorialized or maintained by someone else in the future, passing along passwords and other information might be a good idea.

Yes, the idea to share with nominee account makes sense. Most stuff does remain online till site is up and running. Thanks for sharing!

I think most platforms do have some kind of policy for memorializing accounts, like Facebook does, though I’m not entirely sure how it works for other social media sites. I think it would be beneficial if all social media sites had clear and consistent guidelines to handle and manage the digital legacy of those who have passed away so that these situations are addressed properly with respect and dignity.
