Good gardening

Last week I went for an outing with a friend to an open garden. Their herbaceous border was particularly impressive, but all the garden really was very organised. I was impressed with the way the plants were mainly in separate clumps, some even with a space around them. In my garden everything seems to just grow all over everything else and before I know it some things have been swamped and I forget about them until eventually I remember ‘Didn’t I have such-and-such a plant?’ and I realise it has vanished. I got chatting to one of the gardeners, asking her the names of some of the plants, and then I remarked on the neat plant separation and she replied ‘That’s just good gardening’. Well that told me! I am now out with my trowel and fork trying to bring more order to my own garden! Luckily the rain we have had recently has been just enough to moisten the clay soil so it isn’t like concrete, but not so much that it turns it into a sticky morass! Our flower bed unfortunately has turned into a bed of weeds. The landscaper wanted $450 to weed it. That's much too much. So there it sits. Have a good week.

Either that's a really high price or you have an ENORMOUS flower bed! Just say you are doing your bit for the wildflowers : )

I will start some flower plant seedlings in containers today. I have to buy some vegetable seed to plant.

I don't think it was meant that way. But it has inspired me to get out there and do some work!

Clay is awful if it gets too wet. That is certainly one beautiful border.

Stick the fork in the ground and you just end up with a clod on the end of a handle!

Is the above the actual photo of the garden? if your answer is yes, then it is quite a nice garden. What are those plants names?

Not my garden I couldn't name them all. The orange ones in the foreground are Heleniums, the pink ones with them are phlox, the enormous purple ones are Eupatorium purpureum, the sort of fuzzy yellow ones in the centre are Solidago... which were you looking at in particular?

A gardener needs to have a lot of knowledge before hoping for a well laid out garden
