I need a new passport

And the big stumbling block with this is getting a new photo. I just hate doing this! I always look absolutely awful. In my first passport (I was 16) I look like Neil from the TV comedy ‘The Young Ones’ (see link below). When the time came to renew that one I waited weeks until one day when I actually thought I didn’t look too bad and I went to get the photo, so those ten years were ok. Nowadays though I just look as if I have disappeared. With pale skin, pale hair, photographed against a light-coloured wall, I am barely visible. On top of that it’s strangely difficult to find a stretch of plain wall with nothing on it or near it and no lights casting shadows anywhere. I’ve already procrastinated for a week and it says they take three weeks to process the application. So now I have put some make-up on so at least I look as if I do have some facial features. Earrings help to delineate the sides of my face too. And I’ve found a patch of pale-coloured (but not white) wall where I think it might be possible to take a photo using natural light so I don’t have to have any interior lights casting shadows. Wish me luck! https://mostquoted.com/neil-young-ones-quotes The picture is completely unconnected, it’s just much nicer to look at! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2024.

We are all such critics of ourselves. I imagine you will look beautiful. But I totally understand why you don’t want to do it. I hate getting my drivers license done because I look like I had a mugshot.

I will need a new one soon, and I was hoping, like it is for driving licences, that they are free for the over 70s. Sadly not. They are free if you are over 95 though. Who travels when they are over 95? I’m sure you’ll look great on your passport.

Gosh are they really? That's an incentive to stay healthy as long as possible so you can enjoy cut-price adventures in your final years!!

@Fleura Sadly, even if we live that long, we won’t be entitled to a free passport. It’s a throwback to the 2nd world war. You have to be born before Sept 2nd 1929. You’ll have to find another good reason to live to 95 now. Sorry!

@Orson_Kart Bother! Still, I had never heard of that before you mentioned it.

Most people here seem to get them done at the Post Office. They have white sheet set up and they stand you against that. Passport photos are always horrible.

I guess it's normal to look like a criminal or a terminally-ill person in one's passport photo

I've given up doing my own passport photos and just pop down to the local photoshop to have it done
