9/19/24 - Update On My Husband

Oh my goodness! 2 bits of bad news and 1 bit of good news.
As suspected, we lost the appeal. I read over the paperwork pertaining to the next appeal. They make it as confusing and involved as possible for someone to go to the next step.
I received an email that the appointment for the guy to install the grab bar was cancelled. Not only was it cancelled; but Lowe's/Angi is refunding the installation fee. They have NO ONE to do the job.
My husband says he thinks he will be coming home in 2 weeks!!! I don't want to get too excited yet; but I'm hopeful!
Thank you for your continued prayers, support and thoughts.

I remember when you were there to see him the other day—I think it was Sunday— he couldn’t get from his chair to the bed without a huge struggle. Has that vastly improved? I know you said he has to be able to do that. I hope he is able to come home soon, and of course we all hope for him to be stronger!

Not surprised, when you try to appeal you often lose and you have a lot to prove. I kind of have to do a means thing for the VA and I'm not looking forward to it. Especially since the social worker gave me a hard time about talking to me about George. And, I thought it was kind of rude what she said to me after hearing him talk. All because he went off on a mini tanget. (which is normal even before his stroke) so.... that was fun.
I know you want to get all (or most of that money back), but be careful. I know those are time consuming and can add up. You both need money to live on.

@LindaOHio He can get skilled nursing anywhere. Nursing homes, home helath. You've been paying out-of-pocket to keep him somewhere he claims to hate, but have you explored options for in-home nursing? It does exist for elderly people who need nursing care but still want to live in their homes. Both of you could qualify just on age alone.

@kaylachan The problem is that he needs to be able to get up and down out of his recliner. The in-home care wouldn't be 24/7. He's almost at the point where he feels he can come home. I hope he's right.

I think it's a shame that I have to prove that he needs skilled nursing when it's so obvious that he does need it! Good luck with the VA.

I will search through the BBB. That's where I've found handymen before.

@rebelann Received a response from 2 handymen. One of them was someone we used before. I will be adding the mailbox replacement to the job to give them more of an incentive to take the project.

I can search through the BBB. That's where I usually find handymen. The thing is that they will charge more and may not want to come to do such a small job. We shall see!

@RasmaSandra Thank you for the link. I received 2 responses from my BBB inquiry. One was from someone we used in the past. I am adding the mailbox project to the grab bar job to give them more of an incentive to take the job.

I am still dealing with Kaiser's screw up. I can't get through to anyone. I cannot help but feel that the "money people" just want us older folks to "die off already." It's why I signed up for Social Security earlier than I had to.

Why can't you get through to anyone at Kaiser? Are you caught up in the automated phone system?

I don't know what all is involved with the appeal paperwork but gosh it does sound like they make it so difficult - grrrr. Someone has got to be able to install the grab bar - grrrr. I'm so sorry you having to go through all this frustration and waiting. That'll be great if you husband can come home very soon . . . yep, we'll stay hopeful!!!

Yes, they make it as complicated as possible. I'm going to have to search for someone that's not too expensive who will come to do a small job. Yes, I'm still hopeful that my husband will come home in October.

I’m so sorry you lost the appeal. And I’m really confused about them not wanting to do the grab bar installation. I think maybe they’re hemming and hawing, hoping you’ll go for the $15,000 walk-in shower/tub upgrade.
I do hope he gets to come home for your anniversary!!!!

It's so hard to find someone who wants to work these days. I doubt he will be home for our anniversary.

It's a tricky install because it's not into tile...it's a shower surround. The person installing has to make sure that the studs are right behind the surround or they will punch a hole through it. He gets 2 weeks of in-home PT. After that he must go to a facility and pay $40 per session.

@jstory07 They pay for 2 weeks; and then the co-pay is $40 for each session away from home.

@JudyEv A MyLotter made a suggestion to combine it with the mailbox replacement. I will do that.

Is there someone at the facility you can discuss his release date with besides him? Why can't he do a home visit first and see how that goes? You don't even know if he would be able to get out of a recliner. When you go to the facility with your housekeepers mother can't you practice getting out of a soft chair with him? Sorry about the grab bar. That kinda sucks.
