Have you ever been sick on your birthday?

It's my daughter's birthday today. Instead of celebrating with her classmates in school, we had her checked by a doctor because she's been sick since the weekend. She's been prescribed bronchodilator for her cough and cetirizine for her allergies. Fever's gone so she got the clearance to go back to school tomorrow. This is not new to me. Through the years, my two daughters would at times fall sick on their birthdays (August & October). It's the same thing with their dad (in December). I've been trying to recall if I ever got sick on my birthday (month of November) but there's nothing I could dig from my own memory bank. Maybe there was a time when I did, I was probably just too young to remember. Have you ever experienced being sick on your birthday?

I remember having a migraine on one of my birthdays when I was a child, and I was so bummed. I’m so sorry your daughter wasn’t feeling well for her birthday.

I guess you would remember something that felt so bad at that time. My daughter just turned 17. She was so eager to join her classmates for a trip this weekend. It's a good thing I decided to not let her go. Some people in her school are actually sick too.

Thank you. Rain on your birthday would be a bummer especially if you'd planned an outdoor activity. I wouldn't mind having rains on my birthday though. I usually just prefer to stay home and or go to a bookstore on my birthday.

@almostoveryou it was an indoor thing but i remembered many friends, i thought they were friends in high school didn't come, saying it was showering so bad. we were meant to meet in a cafe and they lived further but i did too and long story short, you are right, weather wasn't the issue. from then on, i started spending (it may sound childish) birthdays with my parents and only a friend or two. cake was bought, presents were exchanged and we were all happy. no more buying drinks for a bunch of people. high school, i don't miss you at all

@grenery8 We get it. Some people just wouldn't bother, and that's all right. I tried to plan a huge backyard birthday for myself back in 2020 but then pandemic happened. I realize I just want to keep my family close while we're all together and able to gather. Maybe someday I can make time for friends who are just as willing to make time. I want to keep things simple. P.S. I don't miss my high school friends either. LOL

Honestly speaking I never make much of my birthday and will not therefore remember whether I was sick on any of those days.

There are people who don't bother with birthdays. Growing up, I was mostly indifferent with my own birthday. I dislike throwing a party or having my friends prod me to treat them. But since I've had children, I made it a point to celebrate their birthdays even if it's just a simple meal at a restaurant or a walk along the bay. My daughters are both teenagers now and neither of them are into parties or big celebrations. But they're always willing to send over pizza to school and feed their classmates.

I vaguely remember. I think I usually get sick before my birthday when I was younger

For my first ten birthdays , either I was sick or my father , mother or brother would be sick. I did not have proper birthday celebration till I cross the age of 10. So , I can understand how you and your daughter is feeling. Probably , the best thing to do is to get extra gifts and toys so that she does not feel the birthday is ruined. Spend a bit more time with the child rather than usual if possible, and that should help in most cases, given the situation. Hopefully , she will recover and then you could her to an amusement trip or picnic to make up and then the troubles would be a thing of past. Good luck!

That was an awful first ten birthdays. I think you and my husband had the same experiences. Yes, I make sure to stay by my daughter's side almost all the time (except when she's in school.) I give her medication and back rubs and make her favorite soups and tea. She just turned 17 so she probably wouldn't ask for toys anymore. We will get her a nice birthday cake once she gets better. Thanks for tips!

Oh, yes, I’ve had it all on my birthday…broke a rib sneezing, had an earthquake, got six inches of snow, and re-enlisted in the Navy. I need to stop celebrating so wildly!

Belated happy birthday to your daughter, I hope she is well by now. I don't remember being sick on my birthday but it's probably already happened to me.

@almostoveryou Turmeric tea is great for improving our immune system.

Thank you. She's still coughing a bit but thankfully, the fever's gone. She's done with prescribed meds. I just have her drink turmeric tea and take an herbal supplement to ease the symptoms.

I remember having depressing birthdays but it wasn't due to illness. Sad your daughter couldn't celebrate her birthday at school but glad the fever is gone now at least.

Would that be similar to the birthday blues? I've had a lot of those when I was younger. Daughter's fever is gone but she's still coughing. I really hope the meds work soon.
