Have you ever had a dream in a foreign language?

It may sound weird, but I sometimes dream in English. It cannot be denied that English is not my first language. But then I teach it to my non-native speaker students. In my mind, it is inevitable that I dream of speaking English at random. I wondered if you had experienced this.   Did you ever have a dream in a different language? Image Credit: media.hswstatic.com

I don’t know any language but English, but I have dreamed people were speaking Spanish to me before. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States, so I guess that makes sense. After all, I have picked up a little over the years.

@AmbiePam I think it is the reason. Since I come from a diverse tropical country, I sometimes dream about speaking the local dialects of my country. I find it weird if I will not use them in my dream.

@jefferson126 When I was in Tajikistan, I also dreamt about talking with the locals using either Russian or Tajik.

You got it right. It sounds a bit weird and a lot of amusing to me to read this question. And this is for the first time, that I am reading that we can dream in a particular language. This concept itself sounds quite interesting to me As far as your question goes, my answer is no. I haven't dreamt in a particular language. But whatever dreams I have seen so far, they have been in only one language, which is my mother tongue.

@Shavkat I won't deny that this question isn't unique. Now as you say that this can happen if you are living in some another country. But yes it is possible, that if you are learning a foreign language you may dream in that language. But I am not sure if this thing does happen. However, as you said you are learning some foreign language so your brain has got that habit of "thinking" in another language as well. So, I think the dream might be in your mother tongue, but you just so it in some other language hahaha...

I am sure that this question is a unique one. Although it can happen if we are living in another country. If we are trying to learn their language, it is possible that we can dream using it.

I cannot recall but since dor you, it is normal to speak English always when you have class, maybe that is the reason

I think I am used to talking in English. I guess it is one of the reasons. Speaking of this concern, I sometimes stammer when speaking Tagalog now.

@shavkat I remember dreaming in French for the first time and that’s when I realised that speaking French was becoming second nature for me. I was living in Paris at the time, using French every day, but that was the first time I felt relaxed and natural about it.

I also experienced this when I lived in Tajikistan and China. I had some dreams that I speak in Tajik, Russian, and Mandarin. It is because I used them when working with the local people in these two countries. At some point, I was so comfortable learning them before.

For a person who came from Guangdong province, it is rare to know that English is their first language. Most of my Chinese students never claim it. For me, I dream in English at random since it is also my second language.

English is not my native language but I speak more in English than in any other language. Talking in English in my dreams should not be a surprise (lol)

I can agree with you more. I sometimes dream about my students who are so naughty during the class. When I wake up, it is like I slept on the wrong side.

Nope, but no wonder why you dream like that it is connected to what you do. I always dream of a big scary house before. Now I don't.

I agree with you. It is a work-related thing. As far as I could remember, I always dreamed about chasing by sea wave.

I often wondered what language you think in too, perhaps only in Filipino, unless you move to an English-speaking country, and so speak English even more there, then you might think sometimes in English too. That is interesting that you dreamt in the English language. Sometimes, my dream is just like a movie, and there is no speaking in it at all, but when there is speech, as far as I can remember, it has always been in English, my mother tongue.

It has been a long time that I dream about something. Or perhaps I cannot remember them due to exhaustion while energizing by sleeping. Although I dream of speaking the language either in English or Filipino at random. When I was still having my medical mission in Tajikistan, I used Tajik or Russian when dreaming about something here. It is also the same thing when I was still working in China; I am dreaming of talking to my co-workers using Mandarin.

@innertalks During my high school days, I had some thoughts about language our God use. Since my religion teacher claimed that He is universal in terms of using different languages.

@Shavkat That's amazing to dream in different languages, like that. If God shows up in my dream, he talks to me in English, but l guess he knows all other languages too.
