A Day With Mom

Mom's dementia seems to be progressing rapidly, so I am trying to make it a point, especially now that I am retired, to spend more time with her. So, today I picked her up and we went to lunch at Subway and we both got a footlong Subway club. Hey, you can always eat the other half later. After that, I decided to take mom to the bowling alley where they have slot machine gaming. She LOVES to gamble so I thought this would be fun. She lost her money but I won $50. After that I stopped off at the bank to cash a check and we went to Ruler Foods, as I needed some things and she bought a few things as well. All in all it was a good day. She had a lot of fun and we got things done. I would call this a win.

I am sure she felt the love if she may not remember any of it tomorrow.

@porwest we went through that with George's mom. Thankfully, she developed bladder cancer and didn't pass from the altimers. It meant she didn't have to suffer as long.

@porwest My husband's mom's lived until they were 92. that is to say her and her sisters. Don't know how long his father would've lived, because he developed dementia and decided to end his life. he was 88. All I know is we're gettting by.

I had to tell her at least five times the entire day where we were going and in what order. It is what it is.

I’m glad to hear you got to spend time with her. I’m truly sorry you and your mother have to experience this heinous disease.

Me too. Of course life often just dishes things out we don't like but have to accept. All I can do is cherish the memories and make the most of what time we have left.

It's a big win. I went through all of that with my mother and it is a total shock when they go into shut down mode. Spend all the time you can with her because you never know when it could be the last time that she will know you, acknowledge you, or just be totally unresponsive.

@porwest Yep! Hang in there. I had to keep telling myself, "That is not my mom--just her worn out body and brain."

Yeah, it's such a sad disease. It really is. I mean, when you can see the person you know but they are no longer inside...that's hard to deal with.

@kareng When she spent a couple of weeks in a nursing home after a bad fall, mainly for rehab, there were a lot of people there who had no idea where they were. It's sad to see.

@thislittlepennyearns I love them. Green or black. Black are good in salads, on a pizza, in tacos, on a sandwich. To me they are just good eats.

Hey, didn't I say what I ordered in the post? Hmm. lol. I always get a Subway club with provolone, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, green peppers, black olives and onions with vinegar and oil on Italian herb and cheese bread.

It really is. I don't look forward to the day that she's just there in body, but not in mind. I think that's the worst part.

@porwest It truly is very difficult to see the earthly shell but the mind isn’t there. A friend of mine is going through this with her 90 year old mother. Every day her mother asks her”who are you? What’s your name?” That has to really hurt the heart.

Gotta make the most of what time we have left. I hate to see her this way. She deserves so much better. But life is what life is and sometimes it is not always fair.

It is more than just a win! This was fantafabulous! Spending time with our near and dear ones especially mother is always worth more than a win. She would have loved to spend time with you and best of all you are spending time when she needs the most. Most than the gambling or having the footlong sub with you , it was your company that she would have valued the most . You made her day as well. You got her things as well plus you won $50. I would say you had a terrific day . And reading your day , bought smiles to my face along with other mylotters. You have agreat day ahead!
