I am not talking about the idiom ''Icing on the cake" but cakes with icing
There is icing on cakes mostly for special occasions and I doubt if anyone will do it just for home consumption. I have tried my hand at icing cakes made for friends and family occasions
I spent time browsing Wikimedia commons to upload an image here and had a good time looking at the countless photos You are right. My mouth watered
I prefer soft icing which has a touch of butter andhave never eaten that hard icing which is nothing sugar and the whites of an egg.
I had picked up the roses from our wedding cake (hard icing) as a memory which got spoilt in keeping
I will be baking the date and walnut cake for Christmas and will not be icing it

Royal icing (or hard icing, as you described) used to be popular here for all formal celebration cakes. Now, people prefer the buttercream or fondant icing. Water icing is another and is quick and easy to prepare. I’m not a fan of any because of the sugar content, but (like me) in small doses it is ok.
I love date and walnut cake, so please save me a slice!

I am not aware of water icing. What does it look like?

@allknowing It’s just icing sugar (powered sugar) mixed with warm water to a consistency that allows you to drizzle over a cake. Nice.

@allknowing - I add a very little quantity of sugar, no more than a couple of teaspoon, but it is very possible to avoid sugar.

Lately I only buy cakes. The two I like best have beautiful icings. I suppose that they need to add beautiful icings to sell them. When I made cakes, it depended on the occation.

That looks like a delicious cake, I do not like too much sweetness so I prefer cakes with no icing,

I prefer soft icing, too. Although I try to not eat too much of it, as anything with confectioner's sugar gives me a headache and a toothache. Plus the cream revives my acid reflux.

One cannot eat plenty of that. It is too rich

I'd get icing or frosting on special occasions only too, some powdered sugar is enough otherwise. Date and walnut cake sounds delicious!
