Joy of travelling by train in the US

I have had the experience of both long and short distance travel by train in the US. The entire process is so satisfying including getting in and out of trains The platform almost touches the train having no need to climb unlike in India where it is an effort. Then there is the limited number of passengers one sees in the US unlike in India they are always overcrowded making breathing difficult. And then there are pickpockets one has to be worry about in India. Imge credit:

@allknowing I travelled many miles on Indian trains in the 70s, bottom class and overnight. It was exhilarating. Of course I was 19 - no way could I do bettle now for a seat. I often wondered how it was possible to get the entire population of India into one small carriage. I rode on the roof a few times. Irish trains are so boring in comparison - no chai wallahs to pass cups of tea through the barred windows here!

Now you're worrying me. I'll be in India in 26 days. Hopefully I won't have to take the train.

Depends on your travel itinerary . There are some trains exclusively for tourists and those trains could be excluded from what I have reported. This link has more

That is something I want to do again! I haven't traveled by train since I was a kid and that was a short trip!

We used to travel from Milano to the north of Switzerland (usually Zürich) using the TEE (Trans Europe Express), we loved that train and it was so much more relaxing that driving the car. You had to book your seat in advance and there was a nice Restaurant on the train.

My long journey by Amtrak from San Jose to Oxnard had a restaurant too and it was a double decker.

@Dreamerby Both getting in and out is from the same side and that is why it is so chaotic

I love travelling by train. There were pickpockets on the train in Paris and you had to be very careful.

limited number of seats and no crowd sounds good - if you're the one that got on the train in time trains and buses in Bosnia also tend to be crowded from time to time.
