Some People Shouldn't Be on Facebook

You've heard me talk about my mother-in-law in the past. She's 81 years old and showing signs of cognitive impairment. She has a Facebook account that she doesn't know how to use. She believes all the ads she sees there, like "Buy this and it'll cure your diabetes." She is getting messenger friend requests from strange men saying they want to date her and she's intrigued by it. We've explained to her that you can't trust strangers on Facebook and you have to be careful what you post or respond to. We've explained to her that the "news stories" she sees on there are really just advertisements and to quit watching them. She's very vulnerable. I wish I could somehow delete her account and get her off of Facebook.

My daughter's mother in law was like that and ended up ordering thousands of dollars of merchandise online from different websites and then says she did not order them. They had to take her credit cards away. It's sad. It happens and they don't know what happened. You should try to change her password or if ya'll can put a program on computer like the ones for kid control and ban her from Facebook, that would help!

This would be a huge worry. I've no idea what the answer is.

My mother is a bit like that In her case, I think it was her computer gaming that got her in trouble.

Sadly there's a lot of older people that are just like your mother in law and susceptible to scams.

I joined Facebook only because l lost contact with some important people in my life, and l am hoping we can reconnect through that medium.

unfortunately, there are many similar cases to that. she might be lonely and want something to have fun. i hope you can get her to start using it more carefully. or to share account with someone who can watch over her activity

Talk to your husband. Maybe he can discover new ways for her to have fun. There are senion workplaces in some towns where seniors have sesions from dance to needlework. It seems that she also needs company.

Yeah, I can definitely see where this could pose serious problems. Just like you have to take the car away and other things, Facebook might be one that should go away as well for certain people.
