Eggs are missing from many stores now.

Yes, people use more of them over the holidays, for baking and for making special dishes for the big day. The prices have been climbing up and up...I read on a local site here that Costco, Sam's Club, and most of our grocery stores don't even have any eggs right now. 300 million chickens have died due to bird flu. That's a lot of chickens. I know the price of chicken is high, too. By the time the Super Bowl hits with it's huge craze for chicken wings, they will be ridiculously priced. I looked up prices in the US for eggs this week. The highest price is Hawaii, $9.73 per dozen The lowest price is Missouri, $4.24 per dozen That's over $5 difference between the highest and the lowest. Unreal. Anyway, here is the article and the egg prices, state by state. I guess if you need eggs, you better go get them. It sounds like there will be less before there is more.

I did ask the manager of our local grocery not far from my house, and he said he isn't even getting near the amount of eggs that he orders. They were out of eggs. I wasn't wanting any, but he's a friend of my son's, and we speak to each other when we see each other. The cheapest shelf tag for prices of eggs was $4.99, but no eggs to buy.

@MarieCoyle It just reminds me of the toilet paper shortage. You couldn't find it in the stores but a guy who gets overstock pallets and resells them often had pallets with toilet paper on it. All they have to do is not ship enough. Then we have a shortage.

@wolfgirl569 I remember that well. I tend to buy it when it's on sale, and stay a pack or two ahead on TP and paper towels if I possibly can. Luckily, when that hit, I had some extra that lasted long enough at the time. I recall seeing people at stores with carts full of TP. It was so ridiculous.

I ordered an 18-pack of eggs in today's order. They were like $7.50. It was replaced by the shopper with a 24 pack. I think I wound up paying over $9 for them. @porwest would die at that. I pay for them because I need them for my cooking and baking. I will spend that for eggs but I will be fine foregoing seafood, beef, etc. when prices are nuts.

I did some shopping this morning and didn't notice eggs missing "yet" . . . but if it's happening out there, it's coming . Those are crazy egg prices - even for expensive CA - I have somehow successfully avoided paying above 5 bucks for a dozen eggs period. Is it me or are the eggs kinda "smaller" these days?

They are smaller because of all the hormones given to the chickens and in their feed.

Seal them in something before you toss them. Rotten eggs smell super bad when they break open. My grandma had a hen who loved to hide her eggs and made nests all over the place. We handled that hen's eggs with a lot of hesitation...she eventually went to the stewpot, poor thing.

I was going to say that we bought eggs two weeks ago and paid just over $4 for an 18 pack of them at Walmart.

@MarieCoyle We have two 18 packs of eggs in the fridge and I will buy one more pack when we go shopping tomorrow or the next day. I'm trying to avoid going out in the freezing cold just to buy groceries. We only reached 33F today and possibly 42 tomorrow... I hope so, at least.

@DaddyEvil I don’t care to go to the store often, either. I always have at least two dozen eggs on hand as we eat at home and I use them a lot in baking and cooking.

Your state is currently the cheapest for eggs. That's probably as low of a price as you will get for some time.

My Dad had laying hens when I was a child. My mother sold them from the house. We always had lots of eggs and for a family of our size we needed them. I always told me husband that if I ever won big in the lottery I would buy out an egg farming business and work it and leave that for the twins to take over in their working years, as they would always have work I feel. Today I found an excellent sale on organic 18 packs of eggs for 4.99, which is rare to find for so reasonable. The item that we had to go to 3 grocery stores to find this week was fresh raspberries and blackberries. I need them for the fruit salad, and of course they are trucked in, but I cannot rely on frozen.

@MarieCoyle I found some dated out until early February, and although they will not last that long, it is good to know that I have 3 dozen for the French toast bake and omlettes that I will bake in a few days. Yesterday afternoon was full of making chocolate barks with various crushed cany cane and some white chocolate almond bark and then we did a few batches of peanut brittle. My husband loves making the peanut brittle.

I've noticed the last few times I was at the grocery store that the egg section of dairy was bare of eggs, but today when I went to the grocery store the eggs were packed full. I haven't bought eggs in the past few weeks, so I haven't paid attention to the prices.

@MarieCoyle I think people are to the point where they have just accepted the fact that high prices are probably here to stay. I don't really hear too much complaining these days about high grocery prices.

@moffittjc I think it rather depends on who you’re talking to about it. Many of us allow so much for food, for housing, for everything we can try to budget, and it’s hard to come up with lots of extra $ for something when the price keeps rising. But hey…that’s just my opinion.

A dozen eggs from Tesco here in the UK is £3.15 ($3.96) which is cheaper than anywhere in the US. They are less popular here than they used to be, when everyone baked. We’ve also suffered from the bird flu causing a shortage. I rarely eat them, so it doesn’t really affect me. I do eat a lot of chicken, so would definitely like to see the price of that come down. Same with fish, which is becoming a luxury item.

I do use some eggs in baking, of course. They are a good source of protein, so having eggs once or twice a week works for me. Chicken prices aren’t cheap, either.

I am not a big fan of eggs, I have some at home but if they get to expensive I can live without them. I know I should gets some hens and they can live on the cat tree which has about four spots for sitting, Then I could have my own eggs and the cats can chase the hens through the apartment and everyone is happy
