It’s the most wonderful week of the year…a week of Judy songs! Let’s give a big round of applause to our Judys: @JudyEv in Australia and @JStory07 in Oregon (who’s suffering in the same season that I am, at least ). My dear aunt of blessed memory was also named Judy. So what’s not to celebrate! Here’s the next song on the list.
#7: Judy - Hoagy Carmichael
To paraphrase a song title used earlier in this list, Hoagy, Hoagy, Hoagy!!! You may not know the name, but I guaran-dang-tee you that you know one (or more) of his songs: “Georgia on My Mind,” “Stardust,” “In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening” (which won an Oscar), and “Heart and Soul” are good starting points. When I went to see Richard Thompson in Bloomington, Indiana a number of years ago, he made mention that Hoagy Carmichael was born (and is buried) in Bloomington…then proceeded to do one of his songs!
One of the kings of Tin Pan Alley, Hoagy (birth name: Hoagland) has a song or two (seven, actually, according to the list in Picky Wedia) in the Great American Songbook. While this song isn’t one of them, it’s a good example of everything Hoagy Carmichael was: songwriter, pianist, and mediocre singer (even by his own admission ).
Judy
Written by Hoagy Carmichael and Sammy Lerner
Recorded by Hoagy Carmichael
Released as a single, 1934

I love Hoagy Carmichael, but I’ve never heard of this song. Heart and Soul just reminds me of the kitchen scene in Frasier, and the toy store scene in Big. I also like “I get along without you very well”. I say “like”, but it’s a very sad song.
I can still only think of two ‘Judy’ songs, and I’m guessing they may be #1 & #2 on your list.

@FourWalls Yes, way before my time, but kept alive, for me at least, by Frasier and Big.
I still can’t think of a third song. I’ll keep checking in to see if my two have made it. I’m sure they will.
Merry Christmas, in case I’m not back in time.

When you think of how old some of those songs are (“Georgia on My Mind” was written in 1930; “Heart and Soul” was written in 1939) and they’re still popular, his greatest is magnified.
There are three very obvious “Judy” songs…all on the list.

It’s 90 years old now, and not everything he wrote hung around like “Heart and Soul.”
