1/12/25 - Update On My Husband

The facility called me yesterday afternoon to tell me that my husband's oxygen level was low even though they had him on oxygen and that they were sending him to the ER. At 1 AM this morning the doctor called to ask me a bunch of questions about my husband's health and history. She also asked about his wishes if he should stop breathing. Made me very nervous. She said in addition to the problems breathing, he also has fluid in his lungs. They will address that today. Thank you for your continued prayers, support and thoughts. Photo Credit: Pixabay

Oh no, that has to be such devastating news to hear. Are you able to visit him in the ER? Also, is there any kind of living will or life care directive in place should he stop breathing? I will continue to pray for you Linda, and also for a miraculous cure for your husband.

Something is amiss here. He’s either getting something at the facility or they aren’t paying any attention to what he does have. I’m glad he’s in the hospital, at least, where you know he’ll be treated.

So, on the decision, what did you decide? I hope it doesn't come to that, of course. At the same time, when does living become not living?

I have a niece who came out of coma, but has many other health issues ...so I am not sure about that switching off the ventilator thing, because many did suggest that when she was comatose. In this case, I do hope for favorable outcome. I wish god does not put Linda to the test. It is one of the toughest one to make.

@vandana7 I don't know. It's a really tough call to make "in the moment." I have never experienced having to make such a call. I am firm in my belief that existence is not living, and so there does come a point when it seems more cruel to force someone to simply exist. But I really have no idea how I would feel about that if I had to experience it up close and personal. I am not a strong advocate for putting animals down, for example. But I have done it.

@porwest As I said, existence can be living in some cases like my niece. It is pretty much personal choice Jim. The factors that go into it differ from person to person. Like finances, physical abilities, age, ability to get help, etc., following the prognosis. I would mandate that a person tell upfront how they want their end to be, should they have to be kept on life support system. That way, the decision and corresponding remorse is not thrust on the person forced to take a decision. Like everyone who is age 21 should sign a document to that effect. And it should only be in government records...nobody else should have access to it, and the near and dear will only have rights to give part of the key when the doctors ask. Double password. Hospitals / government will have access to one password of the patient, and the near and dear another. Only when both passwords are used, the will of the person can be known. Mercy killing can otherwise be misused.

i don't know what to say. It sounds like they are catching the problem in the early stages. They can treat it to make it better or make that problem go away. More prayers on the way for you and him and the family.
