How long did it take to get your passport?

My last passport was misplaced when my mom had the beginnings of dementia, and she got ahold of some of my things and misplaced them. I did not plan on going out of the country again since I was always so stinking sick. Fast forward to a couple of months ago when I told you about my family deciding on a cruise from Boston to Maine, to three other stops, in Canada. So I have to get a new passport. They said it can take up to eight months so I want to do it this month (the cruise is at the end of September). It did not take that long to get my first passport, but I don’t want to take the chance.

What was their reasoning for the long wait? It sounds like you need a replacement and there is a form for that. I received my new one within 5 weeks. The other expired. The cruise I went on didn't require a passport in Canada porting with the ship but read some cruise lines are now requiring. I was on Royal Caribbean. I did Carnival for Mexico. You also need Canpass for Canada. For us, our card was scanned getting off, going back through customs to get back to the ship and going through the ship doors.

@noni1959 Portland (Maine) is our first stop, then Saint John, Charlottetown, and Sydney. I live in Oklahoma, so while I’ve been to Mexico several times (including a cruise), I’ve never been to Canada. And when we went to Mexico years ago, we never needed a passport.
Taking a ferry sounds really fun to me.

Oh no, they weren’t saying it’s definitely going to take that long, just that it could. Sort of covering their rear in case something weird happened and it really took that long. The cruise line is Royal Caribbean, and the travel agent informed us we’ll definitely need a passport.

@AmbiePam It sounds like it's made changes recently. I hope it doesn't take that long. Where are you porting? Ours changed on us during the cruise. One of the engines went out so we couldn't go through the Fjord. Had a lot of interesting "stuff" on that trip. We want to go back to Canada but take the ferry over this time. It's about 3 hours from us to get to the ferry and then the ferry takes about 4 hours. I think it will be fun.

I am sure it didn't take that long the first time I got it. That is a long time. Friend just got his, and it didn't seem to take that long, but he has had one before.

I keep thinking they must say it can take up to eight months just to cover their bases. I think my first one took six weeks, but it was because we paid extra to get it faster. That contest I won to Australia and New Zealand gave us hardly any time at all to get our ducks in a row, and everything was expedited.

@AmbiePam Yes, probably, the fact that you have had one before shouldn't help expedite it as well.

@AmbiePam If you have to wait months, then the time is cut down from what you pay for.
We buy 10 year passports, and if I had to pay what I do and only got 9.5 years out of it I wouldn't be happy. Although, as it is, the last year that you have a passport you have to be careful as you can be denied entry back into the country if the passport is set to expire within 12 months.

I have only had military passports. I hear that the wait is long for a civilian one. Good luck.

The lst time I got the passport was approximately 3 weeks. In India , ever since the last one dece , getting passport is fast. In case there are large discrepancies , then yes it could take time. Even if there is an address change , there would be address verification within days. So , the passport services in the country is significantly improved. Prior to that the ordeal used to last for almost 3 months. Long queues with no gurantees to finish the process within the day. Now we have designated timeslot to arrive and whole set of things would be over in an hour or so. Hope you get your passport fast. Perhaps there could be emergency services. Good luck!

Before after 2 weeks I already have it, I just don't know nowadays, I haven't tried to renew my passport yet.
Maybe the system is broken? You think so? That's too long, 8 months? Are they going to write passport info manually? That's too long.

It didn't take very long to get our passports a few years ago. I sure hope yours will arrive in plenty of time before your vacation.
