Always Good To Have A Plan B

Happy Thursday Everyone! My son and grandson are here to start working on the stairs and upstairs hallway. The project entails ripping up the old carpet and the painting the ceiling and walls going up the stairs and upstairs. Just ripping up the old carpet which is almost 15 years old was dusty and a job in itself. But, they did it fairly quickly and have now started on the painting. The original plan was to just replace the carpet but now we've decided to put down laminate flooring in the upstairs hallway and just carpet treads on the stairs. The flooring on the stairs is in good shape but the hallway is just plain old plywood. When I bought my house (it was new construction) I had hardwood put in all the rooms except for the hallway and stairs. I went with carpet on the stairs and hallway as they said hardwood would be a big and expensive job and I had already spent enough on upgrades. As the years went on I regretted that decision and should have just done hardwood. So, my son was the one who suggested putting down the laminate and doing the treads on the stairs and I think that's the best way to go. First off, he's able to do all the work and I can't beat his price Secondly, it will be a nice change and more what I would like. Plus having my son here is less of an inconvenience and intrusion than hiring a company to do it all. I have to thank Julia @Juliaacv who mentioned putting a runner or treads on the stairs during our conversation yesterday rather than replacing the whole carpet. So, that's our plan B and now it's just a matter of him being able to fit in the job between his own full-time business. Looks like this is our 2025 project.

Good idea. Good for @Juliaacv. And having your son there instead of workers probably cuts down on dust and noise.

It is always nice to make a change. I put laminate down in most of the house maybe 12 years ago. I really like it. It's easy to clean.

I think the laminate will look nice and certainly easier to keep clean than carpet.

Yay! That sounds like a wonderful plan! Bonus having your son do the work too. I agree, much better than having another company/contractor in your home.

At least I know the work being done is top notch and I'm not being ripped off by some company charging an arm and a leg.

It should be nice when it's done even if it means it will take longer since he has to fit it in between his own business and customers.

I agree it is a much nicer deal having your son do the work. That way you'll be seeing much more of him.

That sounds a really good idea. I'm sure it will look lovely once it's done and, as you say, the price is right.

I am super excited for you that you made a decision, it isn't really easy to do sometimes is it? It so nice and it allows you to have a bit of both, the wood showing, yet the carpet of the runner will act as a sound buffer, which is very important. Remember trying to tiptoe over the creaky stairs when we had little ones napping all of those years ago? I am happy to have had that chat with you and that it appealed to you. Just as a hint, our daughter-in-law contacted a carpet company who had remnants that they measured for her and they bound the edges so that he could have a specialty made runner. And since it was a remnant, she saved alot of money on it. The savings paid for the trim that she put on the back of each stair, near the riser, to hold the runner in place.
