To house-sit or not to house-sit

When we first moved from our country property to the city, we did quite a lot of house-sitting in various places around the countryside. Then Vince needed several major operations so in 2024 we didn’t do any. Now, the people who were neighbours at our farmlet have been in touch to ask if we’d house-sit while they go to Europe for five weeks. We’d already offered to house-sit our niece’s place for five or six weeks and now another friend needs someone in July. We’re going to give the last one a miss as we want to use our motor-home and if we went there, it would be another month or so that we couldn’t go travelling. The photo is from one of our house-sits.

With the first one, we'll be able to go away for two or three days at a time so that will be nice. It will be much the same with the second too.

@rakski I'm not sure what you mean by 'no time'. We'll be careful not to take on too much.

Wow, that will be a long house sit! I don't blame you, one should be enough so that you can travel some during the summer! Lovely photo!

With the first one in particular, we'll be able to go away for a day or two at a time as there is only a few pot-plants to look after.

It's all been word-of-mouth so far but there certainly seems to be a need for house-sitting people.

As long as it is not too much of a strain on Vince, close to his doctors and he wants to do it, if you want to why not?

Exactly so we're going to do the two but not the third one. The other two we can get away for a day or two at a time if we want to.

Love the photo…can almost smell the fresh air! I think you’re right to limit yourselves. One is fine…two (especially that prolonged a time) starts to feel like a job.

With both those we've agreed to, we'll still be able to get away for a few days at a time which will be nice.

You can choose the easy ones. If there is too much to do, we just say we can't do it.

That's true. We'll be thinking of ourselves first and what we need/want to do. We may not have too many years left to go motor-homing!

They are two house sits far apart. If using your motor home is what you cannot do then you will hae to think about it .

I split my time between Singapore and India. We have a caretaker at both places and it works well for us. I have not tried House-sits and it is not common in Asia. I know you both can enjoy a different setting and even lifestyle.

Glad that they trust you all to do so. As for me, I wouldn't want to housesit that long for anyone, not even family.
