Have you tried to be a vegetarian or vegan or are you one?

I have tried becoming a vegtarian (not a vegan) several times in the past. It never works for more than a month. I start craving a hamburger like mad, and a veggie burger just isn't going to do it. I do think vegetarinism is healthier for us, and for the planet. I don't eat a lot of meat, but going without it forever..I don't think it will ever work. Where do you come down on vegetarinism?

@snowy22315 I was veggy for a year once and have tried again but failed. Ideally I’d be vegan - not going to happen.

It's a tough row to hoe. Friend's sister has been vegetarian since she was 11, and has been a vegan for many years.

@snowy22315 It isn't tough if you make dishes you like... seasoned the way you want.

Yes we are mostly vegetarians. We do once in a while eat something like smoked salmon. I love locally made sausage- don't eat it often. The question for me is this: why is a soft cow or its calf okay to eat but not a soft cat or dog? Why is one butchered and not the other? Their sacrifice is my pleasure.

@snowy22315 At one time we had turkeys. I was too squeamish to butcher those birds. One hen came to the kitchen door to beg for treats. Hubby did the very hard work of dispatching them. I bet many folks would rethink eating animals if the meat was not in a sterile plastic tray. I taught a Jersey calf how to walk on a halter when I was a kid.

I tried it for awhile years ago, but I needed a better way to get protein.

Beans, peanut butter, tofu, cheese all great for protein. I remember one time I was "being veg" and I tried making tofu meatballs to have with my spaghetti. They were terrible and I ate meat the next day. That was before we had the internet to look up nifty recipes though.. I bet I could make a good one today.

@jaylar it sounds really good Thanks for the recipe. I have made french fried tofu before. That is really good too.

@snowy22315 you should make tofu 'stickies'... You freeze the tofu, cut it into thin slices. Soak it in 1/3rd orange juice, 1/3rd barbeque sauce, 1/3rd pancake syrup, and some jerk pepper seasoning. You oil a plate, pour the soak at the bottom, put on the tofu, pour the rest on top. Put it into a microwave for 13 1/2 minutes. It comes out full of flavour, crispy and tastes really good.

I could probably cope with being a vegetarian but not vegan. Vince likes his meat too much and I'm not keen enough to be bothered with going vegie head alone.

In my limited opinion every vegetarian I've ever met has looked pale and frail. I will never be one as I don't like veggies that much.

I eat less meat now than when I was young for several reasons. But I would never become a vegetarian and much less a vegan. I do believe in eating reasonable servings of everything though.

@snowy22315 Lately I eat less meat. I buy a delicious steak but cut it in half (thick yet smaller). I also eat lessof everything. I could not eay a whole portion of French fries either.

The best I could do is eat vegetarian dishes at times . . . that's as far as it ever went . I admittedly love my meats. However, these days we just try to eat "less meat" and include more variety of vegetables.

I have never tried to become one. My son did for a year. He said that he felt great and he lost some weight. In the end he missed the meat.

A year is a good commitment. I don;t think I could do it that long. All I would have to see are some juicy burgers and I would be done. I do try to do a veggie day once a week though. No meat today but I will have some fish.

It's hard to sustain. I am not really that much of a meat eater, but I imagine someone with BACONSTRIPS in their name would find it nearly impossible!

I have been fully vegetarian and semi vegetarian since 2005. Two of the main benefits l have noticed: -- No colds or flu since 2005 and my weight remains between 110 and 115 lbs. And l have no cravings - my meals are all very tasty.

Yes, vitamin C found in lots of fruits and vegetables can be a deterrent to colds. Vegetarians do tend to weigh less, but I know someone who I am pretty sure is vegan and she is quite overweight. She must be stuffing herself when I am not around.

I have been a vegetarian since I was 13 years old. I didn't even know that there were other vegetarians at that time, and everyone thought I was doing a strange thing.

I have been a vegetarian for most of my life. It isn't hard and you don't feel these 'cravings' if you go slow, create your own dishes based on your taste you succeed.

I am currently a vegan. It has been the case for almost 23 years. It all depends on your mind . If you have strong will power , yes you can make a decision not to have any meat . I do have my lunch and dinner with people who have chicken salads or any other meat items. I feel it is ok and not to have them. Besides when you decide to embrace something we should be happily doing it and not forcing ourselves onto it. If you feel you are unable to do it , you could cut down on the meat consumption slowly and increase the vegetarian quotient of the food. That is also a good way to be healthier. Good luck!
