It's a special day for Australia

Today is Australia Day for some and Invasion Day for others as it’s the day the British proclaimed Australian territory as their own and the rest, as they say, is history. Some will be taking to the streets in protest; some will be protest against the protesters and many will have sore heads in the morning. Many will be taking out Australian citizenship on this day. Some might be given hats adorned with corks on strings which are supposed to keep the flies at bay; others might be given jars of Vegemite; all will receive a certificate saying they can now call themselves Australian citizens with all the rights and responsibilities that go with it. We are attending a barbecue at the clubhouse and enjoying the afternoon with friends. Later, there is another informal gathering at the barbecue opposite our house. And the final of the Australian Open Tennis will be on in the evening. We’ll be very busy relaxing today! The photo many will have seen before. It’s how the world really appears.

Celebrate the Australia Day. Interesting how people see the day from different perspectives. And it is a great day to get Australian Citizenship . I was disappointed to see Novak forfeit the semifinal in the Australian Open. I wanted him to cross the 25th grandslam milestone. Well, it seems it needs to wait for some more time. Perhaps the injury became too much to go forward with things. In India , the Republic day is on January 26th. Unfortunately this time is falls on a weekend , else it is a public holiday. There will be parade at the capital and is a good sight to watch. Well enjoy the barbecues. Have fun!

@RevivedWarrior Happy Republic Day Wishes! Yes we missed a holiday but we had an event in our society where kids of many ages performed cultural activity. It was great to watch. Novak forfeiting the match was quite dramatic but well sometimes it does happens.

The barbecues sound fun. I’d like the vegemite over the strange hat

Both the hat and Vegemite are seen as Australian icons. lol For some reason, not many non-Australians like Vegemite.

@JudyEv I tried Vegemite that a friend brought back from Australia. I accused the friend of trying to poison me!

@JudyEv Yet I believe that a lot of Diversity and Inclusion programs are on in Australia. I think there are perhaps a few aboriginal folks in different Aussie Sports teams?

There are a lot of celebrations but indigenous people are not happy about them.

I'm glad that Australia is still granting citizenship to their immigrants, not like that other place that is now questioning citizenship for some people actually born in that country.

@JudyEv How far back do you go to be considered pure laine as they say in Quebec? My mother was born in Canada but her parents weren't, and my father certainly wasn't either. So am I only one quarter Canadian?

We've just discovered that our Australian citizens can also be in limbo if their parents haven't been born here. I think it's only a problem if they get into trouble with the police.

"Protest against Protestors" sounds quite interesting!! Interestingly, today 26th January isthe 76th Indian Republic Day. It was in 26 January 1950 that Independent India became a republic. Quite a long journey since then. Also, India Australia have a good Political - Economic and Sports relationship.

@JudyEv Not sure. Too many players in the International Diplomacy. Seemingly fragile peace has been brokered between Israel and Hamas but Russia-Ukraine war continues. Let us hope that Trump recognizes that there has to be a balance between American interests and the rest of the world interests. His posture on Greenland is highly unrealistic and stands against the tenets of UN charter and even the principles of NATO.

Yes it's our national day but there is a lot of controversy because the indigenous people see it as the day white people took over their land.

New winner - Madison Keys in the Australian Open. I was reading a lot of statistics about her in the newspaper. The special thing is that she started at a young age and in the year 2015.
