Creativity in the kitchen

Most of us have learnt to cook through our mothers -atleast I have. Then there are friends and now YouTube that gives us ideas. But what I have noticed is in the process of being busy in the kitchen we also create something that could be termed 'Necessity is the mother of invention' I have to my credit a few such situations and the latest is using the oranges that I have. The maid bought some and they are all very sour I now use them instead of tamarind I made a brinjal curry today and instead of adding tamarind I peeled an orange and squeezed it into the curry. Smart idea. Right? Nice taste. ] Anything you can share?

When purchasing oranges it is sometimes difficult to tell if they are sweet or sour. When l get the sour ones l make orangeade - similar to lemonade.

That's a good idea. Loose jacket oranges are sweet. She brought the tight jacket oranges

This is the first time I heard that oranges can be used in cooking. I have learnt cooking through recipe books. I lived in a hostel so did not get chance to learn cooking. After marriage I was working full time so MIL would cook and when I moved out from there husband would cook as he was working from home. I have invented my own dishes over time. I have never been fond of cooking but cook at home because there is no one else to cook for me

@allknowing Guess I am not too great with experimenting in the kitchen. Since I have to cook only for myself I just make something that's quick and does not need too many ingredients.

@mayka123 You must change your thinking. You deserve the best in life and that includes exotic food atleast once in a while

I am not familiar with curries but it still sounds like a good idea. Just because the orange is too sour to enjoy plain does not mean it cannot be used.

I am still a neophyte in cooking, but the skill is improved. I reckoned the idea of not asking my lovely mother to teach me while she is still living here on earth.

@allknowing I totally agree with you. It was too late to whine about it. I am trying my best to learn how to cook in a hard way at present.

I understand. When special dishes are attempted there should be others to share it

I was thinking of making some sort of custard but I don't want to use eggs because we never have enough of them, so I might go with bananas instead. But I'm not sure I'm going to prepare that dish today. I'm not familiar with tamarind but well done on finding an alternative.

hmm that sounds a good idea the orange juice in the curry. I use all kinds of substitutes out of necessity. Nothing I can particularly remember.

That was a really good idea to use the oranges. I am always disappointed when oranges aren't sweet and juicy.
