A Mouth Full Of Yuck

I have always loved fruit. Fruit was plentiful in Florida and I loved all of the fruit stands that were in Tampa. After I left Florida for good I have never come across any fruit stands that were as nice.
These days I get our fruit from the grocery store. It takes awhile to sort through it and find healthy and good looking fruit. The fruit section is a sad mess, but I eventually find some .
Now there really isn’t much variety. I can normally find apples, bananas, oranges and grapes. The other day I came across pears, mandarins and guavas.
Oh joy.
I put them in my cart and bought them. My rare find was a big hit and a big miss. The pears and mandarins were scrumptious, but the guavas were a mouth full of Yuck.
I don’t know what was wrong with them. They are definitely ripe. It was such a disappointment.
Have you ever had a mouth full of yuck ?

Yes, I sure have. I love cantaloupe. I haven't found a good, ripe one in several years now. We just get mostly duds here anymore. Even oranges are small and not very flavorful. When I was a kid gramma grew plums, berries of all kinds, concord grapes, currants, apricots and several others I am forgetting. Gone are the days of good stuff.
Sorry you got the yuck.

@sallypup ......We used to have a roadside stand just up the road about a 1/4 mile. Since I don't drive anymore I don't even know if it is still there. I don't mind paying a little extra if the fruit and vegetables are of good quality.

@celticeagle No farmers selling melons from the backs of their trucks? That's something that I miss from living in Eastern WA.

Our local Walmart used to have really bad fruit. I mean really bad. Then they built a Super Target, and suddenly our Super Walmart shaped up their fruit offerings. Because ten years ago it was just disgusting. We have other grocery stores with perfectly fine fruit, but they, of course, are more expensive, and many of us have to go for the cheapest store.
Have you ever had a star fruit? I’ve always wanted to try one.

I never have had a star fruit. If we drive to the city there is much more variety and good looking fruit, but it is over an hour away.

You should try soaking thick cardboard in water and then taking a bite of it. That's how starfruit tastes! (I've tried eating it twice. People swore I must have gotten one that wasn't ripe yet. It was just the same taste the second time around!
)
I did find out from an article online that anyone who has kidney problems shouldn't eat starfruit because it has a chemical in it that can damage kidneys, cause kidney stones, cause confusion and seizures. I do have kidney problems and won't be trying starfruit again.

Good way to put it and your pic is good. Definitely, some fruit is definitely better than others but usually it is good. Once I had some flounder which was all mushy. That was a definite mouthful of yuk.

The papaya that I ate had one part that was too soft. Then I realised it was dropped while plucking it I should have seen it before paying for it

I have found that fruit from the grocery store and mostly imported does not have the flavor of fruit from the fruit stands. I can't tell you how long it has been since I got a good peach out of the grocery store!! I was spoiled at LSU! The peach man came every year from Georgia and sold peaches out of his truck. They were SO good!!

That sounds awful.
I find that oranges from Florida are often past being ripe and sometimes very close to rotten when I see them in the grocery stores. It is just too far to ship them.
Apples, bananas, grapes, pears mangos are all very good regardless of the time of the year that buy them.
I had a handful of yuck the last time that I reached into the basket to take out a mandarin orange as it looked fine, but was green and moldy on the bottom side and went directly into the garbage.

Yes, I have. When getting into the colder months, peaches may look good but when you bite into one, it may have started going bad. At least Walmart will take them back and refund my money when that happens. Then I won't buy peaches again until the new crop comes in the following Summer.
I've also had oranges in the bag start molding after I get them home. Walmart will buy those back, too. I try to check the next bag of oranges more carefully before I buy it.

Supermarket fruit is often variable. Apples, oranges, grapefruit and grapes are generally good. Bananas we have to buy a series of shades to get the right ripeness - but at least they do ripen in time. Pears are generally rock hard when bought and we have to wait, but they also do ripen quite well after a week or so in the fruit bowl. Some fruit though just never do - supermarket plums are always like small cannon balls (even in summer) I don't know where they come from. There is just no comparison with real ripe plums which are so delicious! Luckily we have a plum tree here in our garden. And I really don't know why anyone bothers to buy soft fruits like strawberries or peaches in winter, except for cooking. They are just hard and tasteless. Forty or fifty years ago strawberries were a real summer treat, only available for a few short weeks in June and July. Now they are available all year round but they are enough to put you off ever buying any!

Yes I have. I go to the farmers market in the summer here, nothing compares to garden fresh.

Yes I have. Recently I have felt so sad the way the produce is. I never remember it like this Marie.
