Update (I Don’t Know What to do With Myself)

I just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions and also prayers for me Friday night after I explained the situation with my back (caused by long ago car accident). I used Doordash to try some of the OTC suggestions, but none worked. Eventually, I took the other advice, and went to the ER (my insurance won’t pay for Urgent Care). I explained to them everything, and they said based on my history they would normally prescribe a small amount of a narcotic. However, since I signed a pain contract with that other doctor who forgot to call in my medicine, they said I was probably right in turning that down. So, like I thought, they gave me a shot of a strong anti inflammatory (I’d had it before) and sent me home. Told me to come back if it got worse (and to follow up with that doctor). Unfortunately, that didn’t work either. That being said, I got two hours of sleep Friday night, which was great. Saturday morning I called the cupping/massage lady and she got me in to work in me. She made the pain bearable, and I actually got a nap. Meanwhile, I got a text from his office Saturday morning informing his patients he would probably be back Wednesday, but the absolute latest would be a week from tomorrow. So I really appreciate you guys. I’m going to call his office tomorrow, and get a little more forceful in finding out what is going on and how I can get help. I don’t want to go through another week of this. I’m tough, but I’m also tired of living in the fetal position.

Your doctor is irresponsible. He should have assigned another doctor to take over for him if anything came up with his patients! (Make sure and ask if there's an alternate doctor on call when you talk to his office tomorrow, just in case he did leave an alternate doctor on call and the office staff "forgot" to inform you.) If I was hurting as bad as you have been, I'd call your state medical board and complain. There's no reason to leave someone without their pain meds, no matter how badly you think you need a vacation! I'm glad you're finding small ways to feel good enough to catch a little sleep but you shouldn't have to do that.

I did ask if he had an alternate doctor on the suggestion of my nurse friend. She was certain he would, but he didn’t. I hadn’t thought of calling the state medical board, but it might not be a bad idea.

Please don’t judge the system by my situation. Lol it’s a weird one. But hey, sometimes it boggles my mind too.

@AmbiePam No. I meant, you all have to take appointments first, and then go there on that date and time. We do not have such type of synchronization out here.

You need another Doc who cares. He doesn't sound at all like somebody who should in charge of your health. Hugs.

This situation is so wrong, to leave patients in situations like this is so, so wrong! It makes me sad. You did everything right, and you still received no help. I don't know any answers...but I know, if it were me, come Monday morning I would go to that office, demand all of my records, and then report them to the medical board. Take a witness with you when you go there, your Dad or stepmom or someone...have the doctor write you an actual release so you can get the medicine you need as soon as possible. This is wrong, so wrong. So he left all of his patients in this situation, and basically disappeared. I don't know this doctor, but I do know I do not like what he has done by leaving no one in charge. This is wrong in every way. I'm so sorry, Amber. I hate to think of you being in that kind of pain.

I just responded to your last discussion! Good to read you are better and that you visited the ER. Like I mentioned earlier , do not think it is muscle issue and seem to be nerve one. You can try the ice pack idea and see if it works. But only after discussing with your medical person. I think it is also nice to have the medical report of yours with you instead of being only doctor since it will help for reference in case you go to others.I can understand what you are going through and this physcial pain is something that needs to be resolved by a medical practitioner. Is there any telehealth facilities who can help? Take care!

We have reached telehealth ...you would think America is more advanced. Even a doctor on vacation could have been contacted across net.

@vandana7 Because it’s pain medication, he has to be in the same state I am in to prescribe it. So even if we did a telehealth visit, he couldn’t send in a prescription. I should point out not all pain medications are like that. It’s just MY kind of medicine has to be done that way. Normally, it’s MUCH easier.

@AmbiePam Have you tried physical therapy? Relying on pain meds is a slippery slope which I am sure you know. After your shabby and inconsiderate treatment by this doc...makes me so mad..I would for sure be shopping for another. They can't all be that bad.

So are you looking for a new doctor? I know not all of them accept your insurance. This just stinks.

They are so overbooked it’s not funny, but I plan on asking if I can get on a waiting list tomorrow. Because I did call the others, and they weren’t taking new patients. Yeah, my insurance is a problem. Doctors do not want people like me.

Oh ugh - I'm sorry you went through going to ER and their fix didn't work. I'm glad that cupping/massage lady brought you some relief that you could actually rest. I still think it's not cool of the pain doctor and office to not have a protocol for their hurting patients as to what to do in case of his absence. With pain, over a week is a long time to have to wait . . . this is soooo not acceptable.

I didn’t know until my nurse friend told me that most doctors have someone who covers for them. I also kind of feel sorry for his receptionist. Can you imagine the irate calls she’s getting?

I reported a different doctor once, but I had to give my name and go into details. At the very least, I can go on every site where patients rate doctors and give him terrible reviews. I wouldn’t have to give my name to do that.

As patients we are too often left to fend for ourselves while our physicians are away. It is hard, and I felt and still do feel for you. I wonder if your massage/cupping lady can offer you any suggestions for tea to drink to help take the edge off of the pain so that you can fall asleep. I will continue to pray for you.

I thought that in emergency situations they can still give you pain meds. Here I just have to show pain doctor the stuff from the ER that shows exactly what they did etc etc.

They can absolutely give me pain meds, no problem. And then my pain management doctor is free to no longer see me. If it doesn’t come from him, I’m not allowed to have it. Stupid contract.

@thislittlepennyearns I’ve never tried that. I might do an online cross check to see if it would hurt to combine that with anything I’m already taking. Thanks for the idea.

@AmbiePam Oh that's way worse than what it is here. I would be mad. LOL I hope you're able to sleep tonight. What about maybe the Pain Quil that DayQuil/NyQuil makes? I know you've tried some otc stuff, but it worked for me a little bit, enough to ease it until it knocked me out a couple weeks ago.
