Question of the Day: How does Rain Effect Your Mood

In what ways does rain effect your mood. After reading some old peanuts comic strips which used rain as a topic, it made me wonder just what mood would pertain to me. Maybe you feel the same about rain as I do. Or you might be someone who likes rain. Anyway, I'm not a fan of rain, although I know it's a must (just ask California). I tend to get a bit "antsy" when it rains day after day. It makes me "crabby" especially during summer when I want to be doing outdoor things. Another negative about rain for me, is being caught in a downpour without an umbrella. Wet head isn't a good look for anyone! And don't forget about going on a vacation for a week only to have it rain most every day. That just "bums me out." Of course, one person who enjoyed the rain was Gene Kelly. Remember his dance scene in the movie "Singin' in the Rain." I would say his mood was "happy," and his falling in love just might make you forget how wet you're getting, lol. Now, I don't view rain as totally negative. Like in the winter when it's not cold enough to snow, but rains instead. That makes me "grateful." Also, rain fills our reservoirs, nourishes nature and helps me to have a beautiful garden. So, looking at it philosophically, I guess "in life a little rain must fall." What's your experiences with rain and how do you feel about it?

I love the rain when I have nothing to do. I live in Florida, so if it's raining enough to be heard inside, it's usually a downpour and I've been in my fair share of those. Not fun. In general, mty mental state isn't affected, but it will physically drain me and me having running like a snal all day.

@dgobucks226 That's one thing you can do. I sometimes have to go outside to get trash out. So... I wind up going outside at least once a day.

Florida is home to the rainy season, as I found out when I lived briefly in Fort Myers. I think it affects me some when rain continues day after day. But looking at it from the positive point of view, rain provides me an opportunity to do a thorough house cleaning or just reorganize my stuff.

I feel the way about winter as you do about rain!! I don't mind a light rain, sprinkles or mist. I do not enjoy thunderstorms or fronts that can stir up tornadoes. We have too many of those hitting in my area, so I prefer those calm rains!

Good point, rain and thunderstorms could become a tornado if the conditions are right. And lightening can be deadly. On the positive side, I enjoy looking up at the sky after a summer rain and seeing a rainbow.

My feelings about rain depend on what I'm doing! I love listening to the rain on the windows during a thunderstorm as long as I am indoors with nowhere to go. If I'm caught out in the rain, I'm less of a fan. I was once on holiday when we had an unexpected downpour. I live in England. I was on holiday in Spain. I felt like the weather had swapped countries as it was warmer in England at that point! Wasn't a fan of that, especially as it meant cutting short a trip that took longer to get there than we spent at the place we were visiting. On another holiday, this time in England, it was August. There was constant drizzly rain all the time we were there. It was difficult to find much to do that didn't involve spending time out in the rain!

I agree about rain on the windows. The pitter patter of it is actually soothing to the mind. And yes, rain can definitely ruin plans in spite of its benefits. On the other hand, rain can set the mood for a quiet evening. When cold and damp outside it's a great reason to stay indoors and enjoy a movie or read a good book. Rainy weekends provide me an opportunity to do a thorough house cleaning or just reorganize my stuff. Living in England you have many opportunities to do that, lol. Thanks for commenting!

@dgobucks226 You'd think there would be plenty of opportunities to do that. Unfortunately, I'm very lazy Well, not always. I still have a lot of time when I have to go out in the rain. If I'm home, I'll often fall asleep during a heavy storm!

Do you enjoy walking in the rain OT? Seems there are benefits, like the smell and its calming effect on the body. It's been proven that the air you breathe in when it’s raining is cleaner and clearer than any other time. How about that!

Yes, multiple rainy days produces a bit of cabin fever in me. And I don't like driving in it and having to bring an umbrella. On the bright side, rain can bring a beautiful rainbow.

When I was younger, rain meant more time to stay in bed and sleep, or simply enjoy the cool weather it brought. It also means that if the rain is heavy and prolonged, classes may be suspended, giving students more time to play at home. . But now that I am an adult, my perspective has shifted, such that rain means more traffic outside, making driving more difficult. Going to work requires you to bring an umbrella or coat, or you will become ill if you return home wet from the rain.

Very perceptive comments! A rainy day can make one want to sleep the day away. Rain on a hot summer day can cool things down and what kid doesn't enjoy time off from school. And yes, our attitude can shift as we become adults. All good points! On the positive side, rain can bring a beautiful rainbow. Rain helps clean the air which reduces pollution. Like many things rain can be perceived in various ways. Thanks for your input!

It really depends. Rain every day for a week is pretty boring; however, if we get rain that cools us off during a hot summer, I love it! I also like rain in the winter because it’s NOT sn*w.

Living on a farm and dependent on rain for water in the dams and to help the crops grow, I'm always happy to see rain.

Yes, rain can get a bad rap, but where would we be without it. Unable to survive. I do like rain sometimes. The smell of rain has a calming effect on the body. It can actually reduce stress. Even listening to its sound against the window is relaxing. Rain helps clean the air which reduces pollution. A very good thing!

I feel almost the same way. I would not like to be in rain while I am driving or while I am outdoors. Rain never makes those enjoyable, especially while driving. I do check the weather and plan my outdoors whenever possible to avoid the rain and most times that helps. While I am in doors, watching rain - I feel nostalgic and perhaps remember some moments from childhood and sometimes yes I enjoy the nature. Looking at the downpour these days , I would think we are getting water for lasting till next summer and grateful in those times. I am ok with cool and cold temperatures but not with extreme cold ones. Good to know your thoughts.Have a great weekend ahead!
