It's like the end of an era for many of us with the closing of these stores.

I just read that JoAnn Fabrics are closing over 500 of their fabric/craft stores. They have been opened since 1943 and always had a huge following from crafters and sewers. I always counted on them having what I needed to sew things, made clothing for my children, bought yarn, and haunted their sales--for years and years. No one sews as much as they used to, of course. The cost of the fabrics, sewing notions, patterns, etc. are so prohibitive, a person can buy clothing for much less than they can sew it for. Sewing as a hobby or a necessity has fallen way out of fashion. That being said, I will miss it a lot. I always counted on them having what I needed--a certain color of thread or embroidery floss, etc. Backing for baby quilts, that I make and donate to the crisis nursery babies, cancer kids, etc. When I do visit my local JoAnn's occasionally now, it seems the majority of the people in there shopping are Amish/Mennonite ladies, who come to buy the fabrics they use to cloth their families. I am sure they will miss it, too, as our local JoAnn's is apparently closing very soon. Thinking about those stores brings back a lot of memories for me. Going with one of my grandmothers when I was a little girl, and picking out fabrics for a new dress, new pajamas or a nightgown, etc. It was fun and I loved seeing all the possibilities. Walmart did away with their fabric department long ago and has very little to choose from. Same with Target. And no true sewer wants to buy fabric they can't see and touch first, so ordering it online will be a hard call. Lost arts. And some sewers are indeed artists in their own way. As I said the end of an era. Bittersweet.

Eva, I will definitely miss it as well, and I know the Amish ladies will.

@MarieCoyle The Amish didn't use ours much as it was to far from where they live.

@wolfgirl569 Several Amish settlements in Tuscola/Arther/ area, about 30 miles or so from there. The ladies always travel in a big van as they hire a driver to take them places. They always hit JoAnn's, Target, and Walmart, which lucky for them is all very close together. They like Aldi, too--I often see them there.

There is a big Joannes store about 40 minutes from here. I always intended to check it out, but never did. My mother liked to shop in the one in my home area in the 70's.

It may well be on the chopping block too, unfortunately.

Decades ago we had lots of fabric stores in my city and I sewed my own clothes. Fabrics included 100% wool for winter and 100% cotton for summer. I loved them. Now all that is gone. And I have to buy not very good clothes imported from China that don´t suit at all my type of body.

The problem with many things from China. Some are good and some are not good at all. I like the pure cottons and wools, too.

I grew up with House of Fabrics . . . I even picture that store in my head as it was in our local mall. But it's been no more since probably my teen years. I remember the old JoAnn Fabrics, and then they built the superstores . . . that was our go-to fabric place in my adult life. They also had craft and decor items - and I always loved looking through their clearance section. We never forgot our 40% off one item coupon. I can find the other stuff elsewhere . . . but I can't think where I'd get "fabric" now (I used to sew costumes and such for the kids . . . haven't done that in years now). Oh wait - Hobby Lobby in the next county has fabric, but I have issue supporting them. I wouldn't want to order online either.

Oh, yes...I loved that 40% off coupon. I made a ton of Halloween costumes over the years. I actually enjoyed it a lot. Yes, we have a huge Hobby Lobby, but I have some issues with supporting them, too. There are 2 smallish craft/fabric stores not far from me here, but they are a lot more expensive even than JoAnn's. I guess time will tell when I need something, I don't want to order it online, I have to see it and feel the fabric. Sounds kind of strange, it's just what I want to do before I'm sure.

That's really sad that the store is closing. I like to feel fabric before I buy it too.

There are still fabric and quilt shops around. We had a different one we went to--Hancocks Fabrics. Yes, the Amish and Mennonites and a few others still sew. Hobby Lobby has fabrics, our Walmart still has fabrics but not as many. A time may come when we need those old skills again.

We have a few smaller fabric shops not terribly far away, we'll survive. I try to use them when I can, if it doesn't involve extra driving. The last time I looked, our Walmart stores (there are 4 within about a 15 mile radius) have about 5 bolts of fabric, so nothing worth looking at there.

@MarieCoyle We went not too long ago before Christmas. My husband needed pillow ticking and nobody had it every place we looked around here. I told him that I knew of a place that would have it and they of course did!

You are so lucky. Ours was in such a handy place, and it was very large and had everything. I will really miss it.

@kareng I could always count on them to be able to match odd color threads. I will miss that.

It’s the same over here. Large departments stores have been closing down in most of the major cities and with them goes the haberdashery that used to be full of all the essentials to make and repair clothes. The cost of running these places is huge and they can’t compete with the online retailers. Plus as you say, people don’t make do and mend as they used to.

I wish people would learn the basics and care for their clothing and other belongings. I actually know people that throw things away if a button falls off. I was so astounded, I think my chin hit the floor. And as @GardenGerty stated in her response, there may well come a time when those old skills could be needed.

I read online that all of them are closing. We are going to check ours out Friday. I like Michaels and JoAnn. If one store doesn't have what I want I would go to the other store. My Mother used to sew all the time. She made me some really nice clothes. She made clothes for my dolls when I was younger without a pattern. I never liked sewing.

I started sewing doll clothes when I was really young. I recall Grandma making them for us before that. We thought it was fun. My youngest daughter had an American Girl doll, I made an entire wardrobe for that doll!!

I saw that Joann’s was closing. I never got to go much, but I liked it. We are over a hour from one.

Mine is on my main track, not far from one of the Aldi stores I go to regularly. It was so convenient. Ugh.

One wonders, does anyone even sew anymore? It's hard enough to get people to cook.

@MarieCoyle It just seems like a lost art. Apparently it is, otherwise JoAnn would be talking about expansion, not closing.

@porwest Yes, I stated that in my discussion above. It is a lost art. This generation can't even sew on a button. Very sad.

Yes, there are still people who sew, but for sure not nearly as many as there used to be. I sew, but I don't make clothing anymore unless it's something like a grandchild's Halloween costume, or doll clothes. I hand quilt baby quilts for Project Linus and another organization that makes sure kids get a cozy, kid friendly blanket when in the hospital, and for the crisis nursery as well. So I do use fabrics.

Yes, with the development of The Times, fewer and fewer people buy wool, cloth and other things, and more and more people buy finished clothes. When I was a kid, my mom would go to a tailor's shop and make pants. That was more than 20 years ago, and our next generation has few such memories.

Yes, and schools taught Home Economics here in the US, and held sewing classes as well. Now, the teachers would never even be able to get the kids to set the phones down to sew. Oh, how times have changed!
