I received a new message from...my car!

Today was an out-of-town appointment for my son, not terribly far but far enough for me, I'm tired out this week. Today we have had some absolutely wicked winds. It was hard to keep the car on the road! The huge wind gusts kept wanting to blow us sideways and I had to fight to stay in my lane for a while. Driving along, all of a sudden, the car made a new kind of beep I had not ever heard it make before--and there was a flashing message under the temperature/MPG part of the dash.... ''It's time for you to take a break!!'' My car has never, ever had that message when I was driving it. I talked to my oldest son, he said he got the same message (he has a car the same make as mine) earlier today, to take a break. From what he was able to find out, it was due to the winds. On the way home, there were 3 semi trucks on their sides. That wind wasn't fooling around today! Does your car leave that message or a similar one when it's really windy? Pixabay picture

@MarieCoyle That describes my hubbies truck. It's an 07 very simple. The only thing I don't like is the gas mileage. His is a three quarter ton while mine is a half ton. He does have just over 60k on it while mine is a lot higher. We sold an S10 several years ago. The guy drove it until it was rusting apart. He said it still ran great. I know it was over 300k by then.

@MarieCoyle I probably will this one. Hubby is thinking about getting a newer truck. If he does that I might tell him to trade mine in and I can take his truck. It's not quite 20 yet

@wolfgirl569 My (ex) father-in-law bought a new, very basic Ford Ranger truck in 1995 as a second vehicle. He drove it for years, then he gave it to my ex husband. This is a very basic truck--it has a radio and a heater, the old crank style windows...anyway. That truck has been everywhere. It has almost 300K miles on it. It still runs, the ex still drives it to haul stuff, etc. 30 years...he says he keeps it because it's so old, he wouldn't get much for it.

This made me laugh! No, my car has never done that. I didn't even know cars do that. Haha

@MarieCoyle It must be geared toward Hyundai's only!

@kareng There is a comment further down from @moffittjc, who says his daughter's car surprised them with a similar warning of hurricane winds, etc. I don't know what she drives.

Hyundai Tuscon. I really love it, it's a small SUV.

No, only if I have been on the road two hours or more. Not sure we have ever been out though when it was super windy maybe only for a brief while.

How long do you drive before you need to take a break?

@MarieCoyle Ah better not to drive in the strong wind.

@id_peace I didn't have a choice. A person can't just stop driving when they are on a busy interstate, trying to get back home with a sick son. I was careful and did the best I could, but thank you.

I hadn't been driving but about an hour. It was the high winds that triggered the warning.

That is a pretty unique feature, I've never heard of a car suggesting the driver take a break.

Nope, none of those, but interesting that you got it. I guess it is too keep you safe. I agree that driving against or across the wind can be exhausting.

We do frequently have a lot of wind in my area. Usually, when it hits that badly I am not out on the highway far from home, yesterday, I was. It was even hard to hear anything, that wind just howled. And yes, it wears you out to fight to keep a car on the road. I always feel sorry for the semi drivers in times of big winds.

Wicked winds don't sound like fun at all. I don't drive anymore so I wouldn't be getting that message. I am just glad you are safe and home now.

@MarieCoyle ......It's still rather scary. I remember a tree coming down outside my friend's house. It hit right at their pantry and luckily didn't hit us when we were in the kitchen just a few feet away.

@celticeagle Big trees surrounding houses is not always the best thing to have. The shade is nice, but the trees get too big and pose a huge threat to the home and the occupants. Years ago, we were visiting some family for a weekend and a big storm came through...a tree in their backyard fell on their garage, crushing both of their cars. We were all just thankful the garage was a separate building, and none of us were hurt.

The day was full of wild winds. A friend not too far from me had a tree down. No storms, just crazy winds. But at least the tree fell in her yard, not on her house!

That’s great hear that your car is looking after you. I thought it might have been for continuous driving, not high winds. Over here they recommend taking a break every 2 hours. Was the car swerving due to the wind, or was the message due to weather reports? It’s a great addition to car safety, something I’ve not heard of here.

It has something to do with the sensors in the vehicle, and if it is moving unexpectedly and in jerky movements, etc. And the wind was pushing me sideways.

During this past hurricane season, my daughter and I were coming back from a trip in her car as one of the hurricanes was approaching our area. As we got closer to where the hurricane's outer winds were, her car kept giving us verbal hurricane warnings, something we had never knew the car could do before. The only thing we've heard her car "tell" us before is whenever we approached toll booths, or when we've turned on to unpaved roads.

Oh, good...now people won't think I made this up! It really did surprise me, and my son as well. But it's good that she has that in her vehicle, since you definitely live in hurricane country!

We do get messages of sorts but it's never told us to take a break. Those winds sound horrific.

There were some huge gusts. When I got out of the car at his appointment, I felt like it was going to knock me over a time or two before I got inside.
