Thank You, Stinky Fish

On the way back to the summer house after lunch, my mama and my sister-in-law got into an argument about their watches. My mama was just walking with me with our arms linked when my sister-in-law swooped in and started being passive aggressive with my mama. This started back at the restaurant when she didn't want her wine poured to the brim by my sister-in-law. We are not alcoholics. We don't want our wine poured to the brim. What is the big deal? Anyway, she kept going on and on about how her watch is better than my mama's and what a poor purchase she made. She should return it. She shouldn't keep it any longer. It's a waste of money. On and on. She just wouldn't stop. We didn't take the cars, so we were walking a private path from downtown to the summer house. The men were in the back having their own conversation and walking slowly back. We were in the front. My mama and I were getting annoyed. We couldn't understand what the big deal was. Both of their watches were purchased from the aftermarket, have high resale values, and are from reputable watch brands. My mama was getting riled up. This wasn't good for her blood pressure, but then something awesome happened. We were passing by a store that sold fresh seafood. The door was wide open and the stench of stinky fish smacked us in the faces. I gagged. My mama winced. My sister-in-law finally shut up. Thank goodness for that. I thought she would've kept it up until we got back. So thank you, stinky fish. You got my sister-in-law to finally shut up and stop getting my mama's blood pressure up. We are now resting in our own private rooms. I won't see her again until dinnertime in a few hours.

Your family can get quite emotional is what I am understanding. Anything for an argument- reminds me of being a kid who had older brothers.

They are hot-blooded pure Italians. Super emotional about everything. If they can argue in public and drag others in, they do and they will. It gets super rough at Italian restaurants. Even the owner steps in and takes sides. It can be tiring for a "halfie" like me and an "outsider" like my papa.

@lilacskies That sounds like a scene out of a Seinfeld episode or what I imagine a mob boss's family would sound like.

@sallypup Lol! I hope not. I grew up hearing all kinds of mob stuff about Italians growing up.

Oh wow. Your SIL needs to mind her own business! It's your mama's business what kind of watch she wears and that is her decision, not your SIL's. Glad the stinky fish saved the day!

There was probably no sense arguing over the watches, if your mama likes her watch then that is all that matters. It's not always about the value of the object or how flashy or trendy it is. Sometimes, it's about personal tasted and personal comfort. If your mama likes her watch, and it makes her happy, then she should keep it! Nothing like stinky fish coming to the rescue!

Indeed. She likes her watch and that's all that matters. My sister-in-law was just being passive aggressive as usual. She gets ticked off easily and takes it out on us. I will have to give the store owner my business as a thank you.

If your mama loves her watch, I don't see the big deal either. Wow. That had to be some really stinky fish to be fresh. Good she got quiet and your mama could rest from it.

Sometimes when the fish are really plentiful in a pond or lake you can actually smell them. Sounds like your mother tries to keep the peace...sometimes though...you just gotta let them have it and let that inner warrior out. But sounds like the Smelly Fish saved the day.

Haha I laughed reading your comment. Thank you for that. Yes, the store was selling fresh seafood. I've seen this store so many times over the years. It was the first time the door was open so that's why we had the wonderful experience of smelling that stink. Yes, she does. That is true. I don't think it's safe to let your warrior out with blood pressure issues though. That can get very dangerous. Yes, it did. I might give the store owner my business as a thank you.

Why would your sister in law care about your Mom's watch anyway. Your Mom got what she wanted.

Haha Yes, that was a relief. I am a minimalist so I don't understand materialistic people in general. To each their own. They can live however they want.
