To File or Not To File

Do you think Elon Musk and DOGE will get rid of the IRS by April, or should I go ahead and file my taxes? The answer could have profound implications on my future well-being. I'm kind of rooting for Elon on this one. What say you?

Go ahead and file. Pretty already got her income tax return. I think the IRS is hurrying, trying to get as much done as quickly as they can before they lose their jobs.

@moffittjc Right, may as well keep it in bank account where it will draw a little interest for you until you send it off!!

I have everything ready to go, but since I know I will owe taxes this year, I am holding off until at least mid-March before filing. Even though I know I owe it, I don't like parting with my money.

@kareng That's exactly what I do! That's why I don't up my tax withholdings on my paycheck so that I get a refund each year. When you give the government that money each paycheck, Uncle Sam is earning interest, not you. So, instead, I have the minimal amount taken out, and then I set aside money in a high-interest bearing savings account to collect interest throughout the year before I file my taxes and send the money off to the IRS. I hate that I owe each year, but also feel content to know that I have the money sitting in an account ready to send out when I do my taxes.

I'll probably file within the next two weeks. I owe money to the government, so I am in no hurry to pay.

lol. Gosh. Could we ever see the day come when we no longer see a need for the IRS? Probably not. I am pretty sure that's probably wishful thinking. But I do think it's safe to say that if Musk and Trump are able to uncover as much waste, fraud and abuse as they want to, and can work the U.S. toward a more balanced budget and even start knocking DOWN the national debt... We might see bigger returns and less demands for our hard-earned money. I will say that these are all still tall orders. I am all for Trump, as you know, and I think he can solve some of these problems we have regarding our taxpayer dollars and determining how much the government actually needs. But I also don't believe we're going to get to a point where the government doesn't still act like the government even if it achieves a much higher level of efficiency. I'd file. lol

Yeah, government will keep being government, no matter how efficient they become. And besides, is it possible to actually use the words “government “ and “efficiency” in the same sentence?

That's awesome! Such a quick turnaround. Too bad the rest of our government doesn't operate that quickly.

Go ahead and file your taxes. My husband and I and son filed online at the end of January and have already gotten a refund. Elon won't get rid of it. He is all talk.

@LeaPea2417 I'm not for abolishing our government's ability to collect taxes, I just think maybe this is a good time to start a conversation at the Federal level of how we could maybe find a better way. The IRS tax laws have become so complicated that it's hard to know if you're doing the right thing when taking deductions or allowances when filing taxes.

I don’t think he or Trump has the power to abolish the IRS. I think that would take an act of Congress.

File. I already got my refund. No matter what is being said, the IRS is regulated by congress. It wouldn't be an easy fight.

@noni1959 I purposely withhold less than what I know I'm going to owe, because I set that money aside in a high-interest bearing savings account to make me money over the course of a year. I always have enough (more than enough, actually) in that account to cover what I owe each year.

@moffittjc Don't blame you. Last minute long as it's post marked. I remember doing that when I was married. He caused us to owe all the time. Didn't look good for my job but they understood my battle with him.

Even if they abolish the IRS, they’re still going to make us pay somehow, some way. Unfortunately, taxes are a necessary evil. Did you get a refund, or did you owe?

@lovebuglena Nice! I complain about having to pay taxes, but in the end it's not really that bad. What I owe is usually minimal.
