Sinkhole Delays Our Trip

As many of you know, I frequently visit Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, which is normally about an hour and a half drive from my home. This past Friday, an impromptu trip was taken as a result of a favorable work schedule for both my daughter and myself, not to mention an absolutely gorgeous day to be out at the theme parks. And on top of that, Disney's Epcot theme park is hosting its annual Flower and Garden Festival, a must see for flora lovers of all types. We got an early start and were excited to be able to spend a day sampling all the wonderful festival foods and drinks, as well as the chance to enjoy the many colorful plants and topiaries on display. However, the 1.5 hour trip ended up taking us 4 hours to get there. Toll Road 429 in Orlando--which is our super secret shortcut back way into Disney World--had to shut down 3 of its 4 lanes of southbound traffic after a sinkhole opened in the roadway. When I say 3 of its 4 lanes, in reality it was all three of the travel lanes that had to be shut down. Luckily (if there is a such thing in this situation), the sinkhole occurred right at a toll plaza, and the "4th" lane that remained open was the cash only lane for paying tolls. So all traffic had to be re-routed over to the cash lane. As any of you are aware of the difficulties of merging three lanes of rush hour traffic down to one lane, you can imagine what a chaotic scene it was, and why it took so long to get past the area. It was agonizing. Not just because it was cutting into our Disney time at the parks, but because sitting there for hours not moving was painstakingly boring. And we were starving, since we didn't eat before leaving because we wanted a hearty appetite for all the food we planned on eating at Epcot. The only bright side to the situation was that all tolls were suspended due to the sinkhole opening right at the toll plaza. I'll take a win any way I can get it. lol Thankfully, the sinkhole started as a depression in the roadway, so transportation officials realized what was probably happening before the sinkhole opened and swallowed any vehicles. That could have been disastrous at rush hour with traffic moving at about 65-70mph. They were able to close the lanes before the sinkhole opened into a large pit. Kudos to them for being so observant and fast-acting when the situation arose. This was not my first encounter with a sinkhole, but the first time I've seen it firsthand happen on a major highway. Hard rains several days beforehand probably caused the ground to give way. Other than traffic accidents, have any of you ever been delayed for long periods of time while traveling on highways? If so, what was the reason? By the way, the delays didn't ruin our trip, as we had just the perfect amount of time to see and do everything we wanted to do while we were there. So, even with the traffic delay, it ended up being a wonderful day.

Oh wow! Sorry your trip got delayed, but glad ya'll were still able to enjoy your time there and have fun! You need to pack a snack bag for future trips! Glad that they caught it and closed the road also, before an accident happened. That must of been crazy on a Friday too! I can only imagine the backed up traffic.

@moffittjc Yes! Thank goodness or some irritable drivers would be out of their cars wanting to flog them!!

Before we understood the reason for the lane closures, we were scratching our heads wondering why DOT officials would close 3 out of 4 lanes during rush hour for road work, especially on a Friday and when spring break was in full swing. We were like, "they can't be that stupid." Turns out they had a legit reason in this case.

@kareng I'm sure there were idiot drivers and impatient travelers who still gave work crews a piece of their mind, even though they had totally legitimate reasons for closing the highway.

At least the delay wasn't you wanting to go swimming in another sinkhole! I was sure that was going to be part of your story. I'm glad the trip was a success even if you had to starve a little longer before scarfing down delicious foods at Disney!

This sinkhole was fresh enough that it didn't have water in it yet, or maybe I would have tried to go swimming in it! LOL

@moffittjc Your daughter probably wouldn't have let you swim in it yet. How do they repair roads over a sinkhole?

@DaddyEvil For small sinkholes, they will just fill them in with dirt. For larger ones, they will pump the hole full of either grout or concrete to ensure that there is a solid surface/subsurface. From what I could see of this particular sinkhole, it looked like they were pumping it full of grout. Once that set/hardened, they just repave the road over it.

We didn't ever think we'd get to Disney World! But it was worth it in the end.

@moffittjc I went with my husband several times and loved it. The last time was when I went with Tania and her older kids months before he passed.

@marguicha We always have a great time, although it is so crowded now that it seems most people are miserable there. But we go so often that the crowds don't bother us.

@moffittjc That type of traffic is constant in Atlanta and is a main reason why I won't live there.

That was amazing that they caught this issue before anyone was hurt or any accidents occurred. I only remember being stuck once on a highway where we were in park. It was years ago, we had been away, like you were, on a day trip. There was an accident on the highway and it was massive, with alot of hurt people. They had a helicopter land on the highway, on our side, which made us all stop, so that they could pick up the hurt people and take them to the nearest hospital with a trauma centre to handle such cases. Everything was fun the entire day, until that. I don't think that any of us said much after we drove by that wreckage.

@moffittjc Occurrences like that can stick in our memories forever. I remember being out at Michell's Bay together as a family, and having so much fun together. I remember that everyone on the beach and in the water stopped when we heard a low flying helicopter. We could see it was a medical chopper. The next week at work, I learned that a co-worker of mine and her young family were in the area on the lake, and her young son fell out of their canoe and her husband went in to save him. He saved the boy, but he drowned. Even our son remembers that day, and he was not even a teenager yet and he didn't know the family at all.

@Juliaacv I have a very vivid memory of a drowning at the beach when my kids were younger. It happened practically right in front of us. There was high winds and rough surf that day, and a surfer got disoriented and could not make it back in to shore. The lifeguards tried so hard to get out to him, but the surf was so rough that they couldn't swim out to him. By the time the lifeguard staff got waverunners/jet skis in the water, it was too late. I thought my kids would be traumatized forever, but thankfully I think they were too young and to this day have no recollection of the incident. But it still sits vividly in my mind, especially since I'm a certified lifeguard (however, not certified as a beach guard, or I would have jumped in to help).

That would surely take some of the fun out of a trip, for sure. There was one time we were coming home from a trip to Disney World and there was a bad accident in the opposite travel lanes. A huge multi-vehicle pile up. The next day, they had a story about it on the news; a bunch of people were killed, including 7 in a family of 12 in a 15-passenger van who were headed to Disney World. Really made me sad, knowing my own family had just returned from a wonderful time at Disney, and this group lost half their family members on their way to Disney.

I had a lot of delays over the years. Ice storms, wrecks closing highways etc. My grandson and his family are heading back today from Orlando Disney. They've been there since the 11th.

Oh nice. I hope your grandson and family had a great time at Disney. Who knows, I might have crossed paths with them while they were there! Did they drive or fly?

@moffittjc They drove since there were about 11 of them. If you saw a big happy family with four who have down syndrome, that was them. My grandson would be the tiniest of them and wearing blue cool glasses. He got to dance with the Zebra at the show.

Yes, Florida is famous for its sinkholes. We have tens of thousands of lakes that we created as a result of sinkholes. They're most prone in the central Florida area, around where Disney World is, but we have them a lot in the northern part of the state where I live as well (although they're more prevalent to the west of where I live).

Fortunately, in Florida, they have Road Rangers that patrol the highways constantly. Mostly to assist disabled drivers, but also to check on the conditions of the roadways and ensure they are safe. It would be devastating if a sinkhole swallowed up a car.

wow. At least the sinkhole didn't land you into La Brea. (A show that a sinkhole that goes back in the past with dinosaurs.) lol The only delay I had was traveling by train to NJ. There was snow on the rails so it took 14 hours to get up there. Also there was delay going to an Aerosmith concert.

Oh goodness, I hope I never find a sinkhole that takes me back to the days of the dinosaurs! That would be freaky!
