Where did she put it all?

The photo isn't connected, I just didn't have anything appropriate. Yesterday I was working at an event which included a buffet lunch. The hot food was served by the staff (us) but then the guests helped themselves to cold salads etc. The main meal options were a bean and sage wellington, a seared salmon fillet with a spicy dressing (can’t remember the exact name), or a leg of chicken supreme. The vegetarian option was a normal size, but both the salmon and the chicken were what I would have considered large portions – my partner and I would probably have shared one if we were eating at home. One small Chinese-looking lady came along and took both a piece of salmon and a piece of chicken. She refused any potatoes but did accept a little rice and a few vegetables. A little while later the same lady came back and took two pieces of salmon this time. After she had returned to her seat the person I was working with said ‘Did I imagine it or did she come up before?’ but I told him ‘Oh yes she definitely came up already, she had chicken and fish the first time’. Well a bit more time passed and the same lady came back for a fifth helping! Salmon again (she obviously liked that best). None of the other guests came back for a second helping (it’s funny how quickly you come to recognise people), one portion was really quite enough for a normal healthy appetite. Of course each time we smiled and served her the food politely, but when we were out of sight we were speculating wildly about where she put it all! How could such a small person eat five large portions? Was she on some sort of extreme protein diet? Did she put the food in her pockets? She had a large bag with her – was she carrying a cat in her bag?? Sadly we will probably never know. It was a one-off event so we are unlikely to see her again, but if we do we will be watching more closely to see where the food goes! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.
