I'm a chill manager but....

I will not tolerate disrespect from another employee, especially in front of customers. Every business has its micromanager, usually it's a kid that thinks it's okay, mostly they don't even know what they're doing. Last week this 16 year old kid told me and the assistant manager we weren't doing our job, the assistant manager told her if she didn't notice we all were extremely busy the last hour, she continued to fuss, he looked at me and said he was walking away because he is about to make her cry We let it go that time. The store has new merchandise coming in all the time and if the person over the department doesn't get it entered in the system, we have to go look at the price. The department manager didn't get all of the six varieties entered, however I knew the price as well as this kid. BUT NO! She started nagging me in front of many customers about it not being able to scan. It was to the point that I said her name and told her that's enough. I was beyond mad but keep my cool, I walked away. I called the assistant manager on duty and told her, as we were getting another employee to take her place on register a customer was walking out saying " OMG she was so rude," so we stopped him and he said no one deserves to be treated like she was treating another employee, she had been rude to another cashier. The assistant manager called the general manager at home to let her know we're sending her home and to express our concerns. The GM had us to get her on the phone, she told her to get rid of the attitude or find another job. The GM told us to let her work. Later on I had some time to talk to her, she was humbled down and told me that we all know she didn't mean anything about it, I told her the problem is that customers don't know her and all they see is her being mean and rude. I also, when we weren't busy, told the three cashiers, she was included, we can't be rude about anything to one another although they are school friends, work is work and keep that behaviour away from work, keep that at school and off the clock. I know when the other assistant manager hears she was told by the GM to chill out he'll be happy. Now, we'll see if this problem will continue or if it sunk in. Just another day raising children in retail. To be continued......

Oh boy yeah those kids being in school need to get along outside of school. They should know better. I did at that age but I guess it’s not common sense for everyone.

Kids these days are not taught basic manners and most are certainly not given any good advice when starting to work by their parents. It's a shame really. It's a brand new world we are dealing with now.

@kareng I teach my kids manners and my little one has wonderful manners. As she grows up who knows if she will use them but I sure hope so. Her father has terrible manners and shows her a lot of bad examples.

Some people don't know how to act in a work environment. There should be mandatory training especially if you are going to hire teen agers to work there.

I agree, respect in the workplace is the very least that we can extend to each other, and it makes for a better environment for shoppers too.

I am glad it appears that she felt humbled. If one is sensible enough to merit a job like that, regardless of age they should be sensible enough to know that rudeness won't cut it.
