Our car is gone!

With apologies to @porwest… Our car really is gone! Yesterday it was at the garage for the annual MOT (Ministry of Transport) test – a basic test of roadworthiness required to be on the road, get insurance etc. One of the dashboard warning lights was on, indicating something wrong with the seatbelt tensioner, so they sorted that out, gave it a quick check-out drive and said it was ready to pick up. I walked down there (luckily only a 15 minute walk away), paid the bill and they handed over the keys. I put the key in the ignition – but it wouldn’t start! No-one could believe it, since they had driven it literally 20 minutes before and everything was fine. Of course this sort of thing always seems to happen on a Friday evening. A couple of people poked about under the bonnet and tried disconnecting this or that, to no avail. Eventually the other staff went home, and the boss said he had to leave to pick up his children from school. He said he would give me a lift home and collect the spare key (in case there was some sort of issue with the chip in the key) and then go back and sort it out later. He thought he would be back in about half an hour. Well that was 5:30 yesterday evening! Since then we haven’t seen nor heard from him, and the car hasn’t reappeared either! A slight problem as we only have the one car these days and we do have a few errands to do, groceries to shop for etc. Luckily not impossible to do with a bicycle or two. Hopefully we will get it back soon! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.

Maybe the boss liked your car better than his own or he just saw you had a full tank of gas and he didn't want to waste his money buying some for his car so he's using yours instead. I hope you get your car back on Monday and it still has most of the fuel you put in it.

you are about as suspicious as my partner is! I don't think it had a full tank anyway.

@Fleura I've seen employees at a garage driving my car around after being told it wasn't ready for pick-up yet so I know things like that happen. When I saw my car at the grocery store, I got in and drove it back to my house and then called the garage and asked again if it was ready yet. When I was told it wasn't, I asked why it was sitting in my driveway. They didn't have an answer for that. I drove it to the garage and paid for the repairs.

@DaddyEvil That's pretty funny! The garage I used to go to would offer to drive customers home/to work after they dropped off their car, and they used other customer's cars to do so. One day I dropped off my car for a service, and refused a ride as I had taken my bicycle. I unloaded that and was cycling to work when I was overtaken by my own car driving someone else somewhere!

It's a bit of a wake-up going from two cars to one. We don't have MOT here. The government could make a lot of rervenue from it if they introduced it - as would the garages and mechanics. Our son in Ireland has just had his go through. It's a good idea really.

They don't have them in the US either. I remember being a bit taken aback seeing cars driving around with no lights, smashed windscreens and all sorts!

@Fleura Most of the cars here are reasonable - no smashed windscreens or lack of lights. The police pull up any with obvious defects and paste a yellow sticker on the car till repairs have been made.

What a stroke of luck. But yeah, things like this ONLY ever happen when it's most inconvenient. Sort of a Murphy's Law kind of a thing. As for your use of the theme, when can I expect a royalty or licensing fee payment? lol

I'm assuming you trust this garage/boss or you wouldn't have taken it there in the first place. I hope you get your lovely car back with no problems.

@fleura Oh the dreaded MOT. We have a different system here - government test centres do the test.
