Have you ever eaten canned potatoes?

And if so, how did you prepare them?
These somehow ended up in my room after the move to Kentucky (I’m sorry I mean Ira Twp, MI) and they are nowhere near expired so I can still do something with them.
I would like to dry them and then crisp them up in either a toaster oven or better yet, a frying pan with butter.
Potatoes are the only carb I truly love, which is why I’ve never given them up.
Is it possible to make somewhat of a French fry with these? Or are they more for stews and soups and stuff because they’re already swimming in liquid..
They’re organic. :) Bonus
Thank you friends
Will be back after weekend and hoping to get some expert chef advice on these guys.
I’ve never worked with them before.
Have a nice weekend and don’t forget to watch SNL

I have had them before. Just heated and eaten they aren't really very good. If you want to fry or brown them in a skillet, rinse, drain, and dry for a bit on a paper towel. You can brown them in a skillet, just don't overcook or they will fall apart. Often they are salty, so taste before adding salt.

Got it. I was asking my dad if they have that “salty, soggy, soupy” taste to them, and he just said, I don’t know, they tasted like potatoes.
Greattt so useful.
Thanks Marie, your info gave me more insight

I keep a few cans here in case of not being able to get to the store in bad weather, or for emergencies if the kids show up and I don't have everything I need. My oldest son loves fried potatoes with a breakfast of eggs...I think I mostly keep them here for that, but they are convenient, inexpensive, and tasty. And, you're welcome, I am glad I helped in some way.

My sister got some in commodities. She gave them to me. I put them in soups or I have mashed them. I do not know about frying or crisping them.

Thanks Heather, never considered mashing them into mashed potaters, might give it a try.

If you want, I’ll mess around with them first and see what they’re like. I’m getting some pretty good advice here so we’ll see what I can come up with. Thank you @rakski

Ok, so the salt will help with the drying process.. I have no problem letting them dry out for as long as possible to get them to fry up good. Thanks NJ for the info.

I just might try the cheese potato fries method, thank you, Faru.
And hey if you like the rings and bracelets, go for it. Enjoy the view

@FaruMesh Thank you, but my last discussion went bye-bye for some reason, when I know I didn’t break any rules. I didn’t use any links, or even mention the name of my newest job, only what it entails.
But because I am no longer an overthinker, the “trying to figure it out” stops right here. What you do is take the thought, crumble it up like a piece of paper, and toss it in the trash.

Thanks @snowy that’s the plan.
I’ll let ya know how they turn out.
Could always make breakfast casserole with them if they misbehave right from the start.

I know I am a bit late to this, but my expert advice would be to donate it to your local food bank. But do it anonymously.

I agree with you. Made me wonder why they would want to can these things anyway, I’m guessing as a time-saver.

I love canned potatoes. I usually just warm them up in the microwave and put ranch seasoning on them (or some other type of seasoning). I tried once to see if they would “fry” but the water they’re packed in negated that idea. They still were good. The only bad potato is one you don’t eat.

I agree! I do love my potatoes.
Maybe even microwave with some butter, garlic/onion powder + paprika and pour some melted cheese and then dip in ketchup.
Thank you @FourWalls

They might be good, but if they're anywhere as awful as canned carrots, I'll wait for spring.

Then we’re in the same boat. And I get the feeling these things are gonna sink like the Titanic no matter what I do.
But still worth a try. Haha
Thanks B

Years and years and years ago when my mom used to make them, most of the time draining them, drying them off, and frying them. They were always good, although in my adult life I have never made them from a can myself. That being said, I do love potatoes pretty much any way they can be eaten, just don't use canned anymore.

Yeah I usually work with the fresh spuds, but even they can be a pain because they just stay SO HARD for me (that sounded wrong)
but you know what I mean. They take awhile to cook before you can easily cut thru them.
I won’t let these go to waste and thank you for sharing Mom’s technique. Draining seems to be the main thing here, before doing anything else.

Hello my friend, I’m sorry I missed your response. I just finished typing out this big report then remembered there was one more answer in here that I (thought I) saw but then it got lost in the mix.
Potatoes + salad would = potato salad! Haha
That’s always an option but then there’s the mayonnaise problem, can’t seem to find one without the soybean oil.
Same goes for salad dressings but you know what I just recently discovered? HUMMUS makes a wonderful salad dressing. I had this plate from a Lebanese place with grilled chicken, lettuce, and hummus. Little by little the salad part started mixing in with the hummus and I was like um, yum.
:)
I’ll post a discussion showing what I’ve done with these canned taters once I get to it. Haven’t even attempted it yet.
And thanks!

Nothing wrong with potatoes from a can. We usually have the whole boiled ones in tins. The image on your tin looks like lemons!

I know! They have them so nicely sliced already.
Maybe… scalloped potatoes if all else fails?
I’ll keep you guys posted because this is serious
