At last! I promised you a “hit,” and here you go!
Get up and dance!!! That is, until you realize this countdown is celebrating the 40th anniversary of these songs…then you may need your Geritol before you get up and dance.
Here we go with today’s 1985 song.
#6: Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
Hey, I got to see these guys in 1985! They opened for Don Henley. Interesting contrast, wouldn’t you say?
Katrina and the Waves are NOT a “one-hit wonder.” “That’s the Way” was a top 20 hit in 1989. However, this IS their signature song.
Written by former Soft Boy (Robyn Hitchcock’s first successful band) member Kimberley Rew (who’s the guitarist on this song), it’s happy and upbeat in a way that we needed after all that “King of Pain” stuff in ‘84.
Even though it’s now 40 years old, it still feels fresh and fun.

I don’t want you back for the weekend:

It’s a cheery song for sure!
She is also remembered here for winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1997 with ‘Love Shine a Light’. It did well in the charts, both here and in Europe, but I guess not over there, as you didn’t mention it. Faded into obscurity after that…..

@FourWalls It’s not as good as “Walking on Sunshine” but it won. It’s the last time we won Eurovision. It’s all down to individual European countries voting for their favourites, and no-one in Europe likes us anymore!

Yes, I recognize this song. I don't know why I recognize it, though.
Edit to add: Maybe another one from the skating rink?

Probably, this was great to skate to…except it made me skate too fast.

@DaddyEvil — there was at the rink I went to. Safety for the kids primarily.

Such a happy song! They are a one-hit wonder in my book, but oh, what a hit

It’s like Looking Glass…they had two hits, but everyone only remembers one (“Brandy”).

@FourWalls True. My view is sometimes the music listener's and industry's expectations of a follow up just as good inflates that song's position on the charts when the tune is mediocre at best.

I need to put this on one day in the gym and see how fast it makes me walk around the track.

I like walking, or just sitting, in sunshine. And I like this tune, too.

Sunshine is a good source of vitamin D, and this song is a good source of vitamin H (for happy).
