Here’s another song that’s now 70 years old. This one is on my 100 favorites list, ah, but on the pop side, not country!
I truly cannot remember when I first heard this, but I know I loved it the first time I heard it, and all these years have done nothing to diminish my love of this song. Here’s the next 1955 classic.
#4: Memories Are Made of This - Dean Martin
In 1957 there was a huge hit by a trio called the Easy Riders (no relation to the rolling papers
) called “Marianne.” The Easy Riders are the ones who wrote this song. In fact, they provided backing vocals for Dean Martin on his recording. (Terry Gilkyson went on to co-write “The Bare Necessities” in the movie The Jungle Book.)
As for Dino, he just provided what he provided best: wonderful vocals. Although this was eclipsed in the 60s by “Everybody Loves Somebody,” this is always my go-to song when it comes to Dean Martin.
Memories Are Made of This
Written by Terry Gilkyson, Richard Dehr, and Frank Miller
Recorded by Dean Martin
Released as a single, 1955

Dean’s voice could definitely have a soothing effect.

If I made a top 100 list, then this would be on it too, along with another 1000 probably.
Very difficult to choose from so many good records, and Dean Martin would be there at least a few times more.
We were just talking about him the other day, comparing his version of “Gentle on my Mind” with Glen Campbell’s version. I’ve listened to both since and can’t pick a favourite. And talking about Dino, also made me think of one of my favourite westerns: Rio Bravo, with John Wayne, where he sings with the great Ricky Nelson. Does he make it onto any of your lists? He was a good-looking fella with a great voice.
Anyway, back to Dino. Great song and great choice!

Oh, yes, Ricky’s “Garden Party” is on my 100 favorites list. Anytime I can use “Poor Little Fool” I’m going to.

I think I first heard it on a greatest hits album of Dean’s that my parents had. I remember the first song on the album “That’s Amore.”
